I'm excited about the show. But what it is doing to my previously peaceful, nice fandom is making me so frustrated. that being said, the Tumblr fandom has remained relatively okay, just have to be more careful about which tags I look at.

Huh? Is it being synched with LoTR or sthing? Or the Silm, may be. It's its own fandom, surely.

They ways of AO3 are baffling to behold, but perhaps this happens on the newer platforms too.

Silm. There is both a separate Silm fandom (which is my main fandom) and a general Tolkien fandom. There is also a separate movieverse-only fandom. The Tolkien fandom is mostly really, really great, at least on Tumblr. But there has been a huge level of nastiness recently on the Facebook groups. Way more than there ever was before, even with the Hobbit movies.

I mean, even if the show isn't great I can't imagine it reaching "The Battle of the Five Armies" levels of disappointing/hilariously bad.

This is very, very true. HOnestly, some things seen so far not sure about, others excited about. I'm mostly just excited to be back in Middle Earth and will be cautiously optimistic until proven otherwise by a terrible first couple episodes.

Not going to lie, I kind of want to bitch about it even though I have no intention of watching it. I'll try to refrain, even if complaining about something like this will likely get a lot of agreement back, which feels validating.

I can understand their frustration to be honest. The most expensive show ever made and instead of trying to adapt the source material as faithfully as possible, they're aiming for a GOT style thing that takes beloved characters and pissed all over the source material.

I'd be pissed off to if it were my fandom.

This secret makes me glad that I nope'd out of the whole discourse. Won't watch and won't participate. I might watch some reviews or read people's opinions on the show when it comes out but that's it.
