Or they take the joke and run it into the ground with endless memes. It is like when someone makes a Monty Python reference at DnD night, and you've got twenty solid minutes of people just reciting lines until the DM threatens to kill everyone's character unless they shut the fuck up. I'm the DM.

On a related theme, I get so annoyed by fans who think that seeing themselves as a 'special' fan means they can talk crap and being offhandedly critical about the actors out of context. Not for any other reason but to promote their 'inside' knowledge or extra worthy opinions.

...Or after fandom's been running with it for awhile and you're rather tired of it, you try to subvert it in a fic just for a change of pace and people jump on you like "But that's not how it goes, it goes like THIS" as if it were canon and not a dumb recurring joke...

I bought and read this book without ever registering the author. I never read GoT and the show didn't exist yet so it wasn't a name that was at the forefront of my mind. Only after reccing it to a friend who was searching for vampire novels did I pick it up again some years later, and that point the show was a thing and I went "huh, wait, that name sounds familiar".
I liked it as well! Very original setting. I vaguely remember not having needed the romantic subplot for the main vampire but I don't really know what that was like anymore, it's been a while since I read it.
