i hate it because there's a ridiculous amount of privilege inherent in that claim. every time i see someone saying that, it's always some neet who lives at home and has all their needs taken care of by mommy and daddy so they don't actually have to deal with trying to navigate the world with a brain that is out of step with everyone else's.

it's easy to claim it's not a disorder when you don't have to try to hold down a job or make your own appointments or handle social situations with people you don't know because you have zero idea how difficult it can make those things.

Same with social anxiety, physical impairments and a dozen other condition. It's very self centered to claim that autistic people have it so much harder than everyone else.

I don't see anyone saying autistic people have it harder than anyone else, nor do I see how you would know the living situation of most people on the internet who happen to mention their autism.

"Studies have shown high rates of suicidal thoughts (10.9% - 66%), and suicidal behaviours (11% - 30%) in autistic adults and children. Between 7.3% - 15% of people who have been hospitalised for attempted suicide also have an autism diagnosis. This is much higher than the 1% rate of autism diagnosis we would expect in the general UK population."

"The unemployment rate for people with disabilities who are ready and willing to work is typically twice that of the general non-disabled working population. See the Bureau of Labor Statistics employment status of civilian population chart. Nearly 42% of young adults who experience Autism never worked for pay during their early 20s."

There's obviously other difficult conditions out there but I think you're being a bit dismissive here, especially since this wasn't presented in comparison to them. Additionally autism is often comorbid with other issues and social anxiety is almost guaranteed if you have it.

Thanks. As someone who has ACTUALLY struggled with actual autism for too long and struggles a lot with the neuro comorbidities, when people compare it to something that can be cured I just... sigh

I have never once seen someone with a physical impairment claim that they didn't really have a disability.

Agreed, actually.
