(Anonymous) 2022-08-07 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)Also, I think a lot of people (who are unaware that some of the ways they think about sexuality--especially women's sexuality--are screwed up) see someone who is or was a sex worker talking about ways in which the job can feel empowering for some people, or did/does feel empowering for them personally, and they interpret that as Sex Work Is Empowering For Women! Sex Work Is A Feminist Act! Of course, that's not what the person is actually saying. They're saying it can be and is empowering in specific ways for some women. Which, like, obviously.
But the idea that women are out there becoming sex workers 'because feminism' just feels very straw-man-y to me. More like, sometimes in life you get involved in a particular pursuit and then, after a while, you start to reflect on what getting involved in that thing has meant for you, practically, emotionally, existentially, the works. There's nothing strange or false about that; it's a very normal thing for people to do. And usually some of those reflections are positive and some are negative, and that is also very normal.
