This. There's good and bad steampunk--the bad is plastic and imperial worship, the good is actually addressing and analyzing the imperialism and industrial class stratification. Unfortunately the aesthetic is the easiest thing for people to see first, so that's the primary reputation. Sigh.

I do think that there have been a lot of steampunk fans who contributed to steampunk earning that reputation as well

I was in a steampunk society for a time. There are a few people I still keep in touch with (mainly the BIPOC folks and one other guy) but definitely the steampunk fans ultimately contributed to my later skepticism of the genre.
