They've thrown a lifeline to Netflix and Paramount+, that is for goddamn sure.

What's going on with Discovery/HBO Max? I heard they were getting merged, but haven't kept up with anything else.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-14 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
They merged, the new company is cutting costs a lot, and people are worried that they're ultimately going to cheap out and stop caring about quality.

Specifically - they chose not to release a few movies in the pipeline, neither theatrically nor on streaming, allegedly for tax reasons but also because they think the movies are bad. And they're apparently getting rid of the HBOMax Originals production pipeline (with Traditional HBO taking on more production for scripted series that would previously have been HBOMax Originals). Also, people are mad at Warner Brothers because they don't seem to care about Ezra Miller doing shitty things around the world, which isn't really related to the merger situation but people are still mad about it.

DA

It's like, if you're cutting movies for tax purposes why not the one with the actor doing all these crimes? Why must they cut the one about Batgirl? If they want to have a Crisis event just add to it Peacemaker Season 2 and leave Ezra Miller out of it.

Unfortunately I think HBO/Discovery was probably the most likely company in the best position to be able to build a truly kick-ass subscription streaming service. So if they fuck it up, that kind of bodes ill.

A bunch of tech kids are plotting the next big thing to replace streaming services because these companies are clearly just making it up as they go along and they don't know what they're doing.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-14 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Isn't that just piracy?

(Anonymous) 2022-08-14 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
What's the "next big thing" then? When streaming started, a lot of people predicted that it would end up exactly like TV channels except you have to pay for each one separately and that was definitely true. I'm expecting someone to invent bundled subscriptions (aka cable) next. Amazon Prime and Paramount Plus are doing it already.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-15 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
It's not really a tech problem, though.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-15 07:48 am (UTC)(link)
To techbros, everything is a tech problem. Which is part of the reason we're in the level of shit we're in, too many techbros.

OP of Comment
This. Exactly this.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-14 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate streaming services so I don't care what they do, but if this messes with OFMD season 2 I will cut a bitch.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-15 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
it's already started filming from what I understand, or at least the scripts have been written/are being written but then they filmed a whole movie and scrapped it at the last minute so I'm worried about this series too...

OFMD was renewed for a second season on June 1st, so you're good for at least one more season.

Rumors are that HBOMax is going to be merged with Discovery+, so there's that.

A lot of shows across the Warner Bros board have gotten the axe since May, and they aren't done yet.
