90s foods

[personal profile] philstar22 2022-08-14 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
What sorts of meals were popular in the 90s? I didn't live in the US at the time, so I'm honestly not sure.

Going to a 90's-themed potluck in 2 weeks and not sure what to bring.

Honestly the first thing to pop into my head is tuna casserole (or any casserole to be honest). Baked Spaghetti and Meatballs in a dish. Pot Roast was a Sunday favorite I remember my mom making alot growing up.

Got the normal staples of baked mac & cheese and potato salad. Swedish Meatballs.

Hamburger helper was popular as a quick and easy meal. Alot of crock pot meals.

Sun dried tomatoes and pesto feel very 90s to me

Sun dried tomatoes and pesto, much like the tuna casserole, got big in the 80s-- sun dried tomatoes REALLY got big in the 80s-- but like... definitely stayed strong enough through the 90s that I think they'd work.

For stuff that you'd bring to a pot luck? Probably something like 7-layer dip or something pizza inspired.

Or you could pick up some dunkaroos.

DEFINITELY dirt cake, oh man. And it's very potluck friendly if you like to bring the desserts!

- barbecue chicken pizza
- roasted red pepper soup
- squash soup
- gazpacho
- fajitas
- portobello mushrooms in some form

I'll give you gazpacho, fajitas and wild rice, but the rest of that didn't really hit peak trendy until the early aughts.

That's fair for red pepper and squash soup.

Barbecue chicken pizza was a very 90s thing for me, but maybe that one comes down to how much California Pizza Kitchen existed in your life in the 1990s. And I definitely think portobello mushrooms were 90s.

I think the BBQ pizza definitely comes down to California Pizza Kitchen, which was still mostly on the West Coast in the 90s. I think the first time I saw BBQ chicken in an East Coast pizza joint was in 2004? I remember portobello mushrooms being the thing that vegetarians and women's magazine diet recipes were trying to sell as cool in the 90s, but then in the 2000s it turned into a trendy thing that everyone was doing.

Yeah, BBQ chicken pizza feels 90s enough to me, a native Californian.

Portobello mushrooms were BIG with my parents in the 90s, at least. They got very into them.

Microwave meals.

Brands:
Kid Cuisine
Swanson
Taquitos
... probably down others too.

I'd argue that it also depends on your ethnic enclave. I grew up eating rice and beans every night (sometimes with chicken, sometimes with meat). Vegetables were particular to my native country, but were available in my neighborhood.

I'd also say classic American meals:.meatloaf and mashed potatoes with gravy. Peas and carrots. Pot roast. Mac and cheese. The good old fast food of pizza and burgers. Ground beef tacos with crunchy shells.

Rice with beans or meat or something was what we ate too.

Multiculturalism was big in the 90s, which led to a lot of "internationally inspired" dishes. Tex-Mex, pizza/calzones, pita pocket sandwiches, etc.

If the people at the party were mostly little kids in the 90s, then they're probably more nostalgic for the snacks/fast food than Mom's attempt at Chicken Tagine. You could do something like pizza bagels or taquitos. Or, make things super easy and get some crackers, cold cuts and cheese and make Lunchables.

Kraft brand macaroni & cheese.
And gratuitous amounts of pizza.

Just before looking at Fandom Secrets, I was literally googling Breyer's brand Viennetta ice cream cake for nostalgia's sake! Koala Yummies was another one of my favorites as a kid. And didn't we also have tan M&M's in the 90's?

I was a kid in the 90's so most of my food memories are of snacks and candy. I feel like people were obsessed with spaghetti and meatballs back then for some reason.

You could make pretty much anything, honestly. Call it "X-treme pasta salad" and you're cool.
