I'm sort of amazed.

At the time of the finale, people seemed to be talking about it all over the place because of how terrible it was. And it comes up every time there's a list of bad show endings or how a show went wrong. So, for you to have been able to ignore all that is something. Anyway because of the ending, it doesn't matter who the mother is, she turned out to pretty much be a McGuffin in the story. The writers went with the ending they had planned in 2006, ignoring most of the character development since then - seriously, they taped the future kids' part then and just stuck with it.

Yeah, I've never even seen the show and I know about the ending, because of how often people rant about it.

But hell, even I could look at the description of it and go, "..wtf?" at the storyline, so yeah, I echo the others here who say that it doesn't seem like you're missing much there, OP.

Yeah, you can really tell that they wrote the last season around the ending because they undid a lot of great character building to give us that ending.
Let's undo multiple seasons of character growth individually and together as a couple for Barney and Robin just so that they can call back to Ted and Robin's first date.

Like I get what they were going for. Subverting our expectations by making a huge deal about the MOTHER but in actuality the real love story all along was about Ted and Robin...but like why bother making Barney and Robin's growth so good to completely undo it all? I'm not even a huge fan of the show but they did Barney and Robin so dirty. I mean not just as a couple but individual characters.
