I agree about what you wanted to see for El, but Max isolating made some sense.

Sure, though it also makes sense for her friends to TRY and connect again. At least we see Lucas attempting it. But given how this season emphasizes Max and El's friendship as a saving grace for them both and all they had was footage from the previous season and zero contact or attempts at contact in this season, it just felt kind of lame.
