I feel that in in some fandoms it's just less forced than pretending a prominent character just does not exist.

That's totally fair and in some things would totally make sense. It's just weird because in this fandom one love interest is an extremely minor character who's only been in a couple scenes and the other hasn't even been onscreen at all and has only been mentioned a couple times. There are a couple fics that just don't mention them and it doesn't seem forced or awkward or anything. So it's just strange to me that there's become this big poly trend when the love interests aren't really a big part of the story at all.
