What are the English name?

The only time I watched an episode was when I had to dogsit for a French friend whose dog apparently loved the show. I'm not kidding. The dog was literally watching the TV!

Oh, there's a number of name changes, but the ones that cheese me the most when people get snooty over it is the catboy superhero's name is "Chat Noir" in French and "Cat Noir" in English, and the main villain's name is "Hawkmoth" in French and "Hawk Moth" in English.

Like, these changes are practically nothing, but people are still gonna make this whole thing about them?!

DA but I can 100% understand why they don't call him Chat Noir in English. It's just one pronunciation error away from Shat Noir and nobody wants a main character named after shitting.

Lmao I think that's at least partly why they changed it. I'm not fussy about the changes, but I always thought it would've made more sense to go the whole mile and change it to Black Cat. That's exactly what it means in French, so no need to be fancy in English.

Yeah, true. I suspect they basically got stuck between not wanting to keep the Chat part for obvious reasons but also not wanting to lose the French vibes.

Huh, the theory I heard was that "Chat Noir" sounded too similar to "Shanoa" and they thought people would be confused about his gender.

That, or "chat" per English pronounciation which technically exists in French, but as a loan word in the English meaning.

My basic theory is that, besides certain things being harder to translate on a good timetable, reading subtitles of something cheesy is different from being able to hear and understand it. So we're more accepting of that stuff in sub, and kids' shows are naturally going to have a bit more cheese.

This is definitely true and I even noticed it enough to make a secret about it a few years ago. I realized that the reason I can't watch the dubs -- especially good, well-acted dubs -- for some of my favorite anime is because hearing the dialogue actually spoken in my native language really shows how ridiculous it is in a way subtitles don't.
