My basic theory is that, besides certain things being harder to translate on a good timetable, reading subtitles of something cheesy is different from being able to hear and understand it. So we're more accepting of that stuff in sub, and kids' shows are naturally going to have a bit more cheese.

This is definitely true and I even noticed it enough to make a secret about it a few years ago. I realized that the reason I can't watch the dubs -- especially good, well-acted dubs -- for some of my favorite anime is because hearing the dialogue actually spoken in my native language really shows how ridiculous it is in a way subtitles don't.
