I mean... if you want to cut back on fic reading to create more original art, just do it? I know, easier said than done - but still, entirely within your power.

Ah, I feel you, OP. It's way easier to sit down and read some fic than it is to write it. The only thing that works for me to get me writing is not being able to find exactly what I want.

tell yourself the story will still be there!

I'm with you, OP. I do pottery, and I can't tell you how many times I've found myself watching the hours slip away reading fanfic until the studio closes and it's too late...but I've found the way to convince myself to just stop reading and go! is to tell myself the story will still be there if I close my laptop. It's not going anywhere, but the time is.

Yeah I'm sort of in this situation too right now.

I've been unable to draw my original stuff and have missed deadlines for art contests that I really wanted to take part in - but I've been posting fics pretty constantly for my current fandom since June.
It started as artist block, but for the most part I haven't tried that hard to get back into drawing since when I get home I'll usually spend my free time just writing fanfiction. And I'm not that great a writer so I have no intentions of trying to create original works, but I do enjoy the process of writing and making fanfics kind of provides that outlet and the little human interaction that I get out of it by the rare commenter.
