How was that an appropriate response? Especially considering one of the secrets above this was about the importance of not being a dick. And we've had multiple secrets lately about how people being dicks on this comm are driving people away. You posted a contentless first comment simply for the purpose of being a dick. You, sire or madam, are part of the problem right now. You didn't need to post this.

We've had multiple posts about how ff.net is the Devil and AO3 is awesome, and how AO3 is the devil and ff.net is awesome. It's tiresome and they are generally nonsensical. Look back at the comments for other secrets about these two sites: I'm hardly being a 'dick'.

Perhaps go police another thread.

That is actually a valid criticism, for once. It won't go down well here.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-21 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Having lots of character tags is fine. Having lots of relationship tags is more of a problem than having lots of character tags.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-21 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I will always support more tags over a tag limit, as long as there is a tag seatch and filtering system (like A03's).

(Anonymous) 2022-08-21 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
This, 100%.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-21 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
And as long as people use it. The number of crossovers I've had come up after specifying "no crossovers" is dead annoying.

It can be pretty frustrating when you want fics about a pairing or character that's more on the side and just tagged because they're in the fic, rather than being the main characters.

But for longer fics with bigger casts it can make sense to tag multiple characters, so I don't really think that the FFN solution is perfect either.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-21 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
This is exactly why I hate it.

I love a side character in one of my fandoms and I'm so, so tired of checking the tag for that character and getting all excited because I think someone has written a fic where they play a major role only to find that they show up in the fic to say a few lines and that's it.

Yeah, dunno how hard it would be to implement, but A03 could definitely use a system for setting primary/secondary/tertiary characters or ships. Sometimes a secondary ship gets tagged as background! but that still puts the fic in that ship tag.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-21 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Putting secondary characters/relationships into the additional tags instead kinda fulfills this goal, but it's a bit of a kludge.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-21 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. The wall of tags on AO3 bugs the crap out of me.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-21 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
If the tag wall is longer than the summary, my eyes glaze over and I don't even bother.

I haven't been on FF.net in ages. It is nice to hear they've upped it to 4. I hated it when there was the 2 character limit. Really unhelpful for a lot of fics.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-21 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I understand that it's frustrating when you're searching for single-pair fics or one-shots or whatever but I've been in, and written in, fandoms where your fave or a reader's fave gets so few fics that they're just happy to find a fic where they've been tagged for being in the background of one scene in a multi-chapter. they would miss out on every cameo for their fave if the platform literally cracked down on tags.

there is no one size fits all solution to the frustration of wall o' tags and stupid/inappropriate taggin. right now, be mad and scroll on is all you got.

"I've been in, and written in, fandoms where your fave or a reader's fave gets so few fics that they're just happy to find a fic where they've been tagged for being in the background of one scene in a multi-chapter"

See, that just pisses me off? I'm not happy when my minor character fave only appears in the background of one scene in a multi-chapter. If you tag something for that character I go in expecting a fic where that character actually, you know, does something and plays a role in the fic. I don't want a "cameo," I want them to be an actual character in the fic and not just window dressing. That's the entire reason I'm looking for fic in the first place!

(Anonymous) 2022-08-21 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Hate that, and ao3 for being dicks about implementing reasonable tagging.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-22 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I don't mind tagging a bunch of side characters, but I do appreaciate FF.net's primary relationship tags. It's annoying to be on AO3 and have to manually find the main ship you are hankering for (especially if you don't mind sideships, so the exclusion options don't work for you).

(Anonymous) 2022-08-22 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
People really need to start using "Background X/Y" if they're not the focus of the fic. FFS.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-22 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
As much as I love everything else about tagging on AO3 (especially the exclusion filter for my most recent fandom) - I do agree this is literally one of the only strong points about ffnet.

I suppose this is only ever a problem for anyone in a fandom with an abundance of ships. When you get THAT person who tags everything under the sun, including ships that are barely there or in the background - its annoying as hell when those are the ships your looking for in the tags, but instead you get lists of ships that aren't actually there or even about them.

At least with FFnets limited tags in regards to shipping - you're right they have to state what the main ship is.
I wouldn't say that AO3 should follow FFnets example, but this is still definitely a problem.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-22 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
I find the Minor Background Characters, or the [Fandom] Ensemble tags quite useful when there's a grey area.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-22 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, I disagree. If my unfavorite character is in a fic, even for a line, I want to be able to filter it out.

That said, I'm happy there are multiple options so you can do you on FF.net instead of being unhappy on AO3.
