"full of tropes" - I mean, there's nothing wrong with that. Tropes exist for a reason and can appeal to various folks.

Personally, I enjoyed Naruto in the beginning, but all the increasing filler just turned me off of it.

Same. I absolutely loved the first story arc (with Haku and Zabuza) but then it just turned into fight-of-the-week and I got so bored with it. It was disappointing because that first arc was so good?

"it just turned into fight-of-the-week"? I don't get how it did? If you forget the fillers, there wasn't any FOTW to me? You couldn't just pick up a random episode if you didn't want to be lost about what was happening in the story. Or maybe I'm misunderstanding the term?

It'd help if you were more specific in what you're talking about, OP. Which characters, what tropes? Most fiction has tropes, it's a matter of which you like and dislike and why. It could've been interesting to talk about?

I think it's a very basic shonen show, yeah, but that appeals to people. And if you're someone who's in the intended age group when it's airing, you're going to be nostalgic for it for a long while after that. I think you could make the exact same secret about any well-known shonen property.

90% of Shonen sucks, period. Shonen offers good looking dudes that punch other good looking dudes with some fun philosophical bits thrown around here and there but at the end of the day when you compare and contrast one punchy dude cartoon to another there is just so much garbage. Sigh, I really should upgrade to cagefighting for my angry titty fix but Shonen is crack, man. Once you're hooked, you're hooked for life.

When I first noticed the little octopus on Hade's arm I was primed to start looking for more and by the time I got to secret 10, I fell out of my seat.

(I didn't actually fall out of my seat but my heart skipped a little and I may have gasped.)

It has an interesting world and a lot of characters with personalities sketched in enough that you can pick a fav and run with their development however you want in fic. Also large cast means lots of shipping options. Of course people love it.

I don't actually know anyone who loves it for the PLOT.

I can't speak for anyone else - but for me my love for Naruto is mostly based on the characters and the chemistry they have with each other.
The stories mostly suck (when I stuck with it to the very end I was utterly lost 90% of the time beyond 'A War Is Happening and now there's Zombies Of Past Characters' - but I got happy to see Naruto and Sasuke reuniting in the end).

Then there's just the fandom side of it: I love all the memes and fanworks from the shippy and queer-readings side of the fandom. Also it was one of my first fandoms when I was an emo kid and got way too attached to one of the characters because of the tragic backstory and themes of isolation/bullying.
Plus I like watching the fight scenes for fun and sometimes I'll get in the mood to watch a playlist of the opening or closing themes animation because there's some good music in there.

IDK, I know some people feel like you can only justify liking something for it to be actually 'good' - but sometimes you can like parts of something or just enjoy things for the sake of it.

It wasn't very original even when it was new, but it was moreso than it seems today. It was the first fight-heavy shounen with art and a setting that appealed to me -- I knew about Dragon Ball, Yu Yu Hakusho, etc. but they seemed boring. A world full of ninjas though, that was cool! It's considered an influence now, and I can see it in the more current popular shounen like My Hero Academia, Jujutsu Kaisen, and even Demon Slayer as far as character designs go. So it has that problem where it seems derivative because the fact that it was the inspiration for a lot of similar things gets overlooked.

I'm not saying it's not derivative at all or the first shounen EVER. It's just less derivative than lots of people think.

I have a lot of fondness for Naruto, even if I never finished the anime 'cause the filler ended up being too much (I read all the manga though). The story got kinda boring sometimes, but I loved my favorite characters and kept reading it because I wanted to see where their journey would take them. Also, my ship ended up sailing, so that was cool.

TBH I always liked Naruto's designs because of the majority of the designs were simple. Jump suits and loose fitting clothes, they look so cozy.

A lot of long time running shounen series are like this though so I can't fault anyone for not getting into it. They are heavy investments with so little pay off compared to shorter series.
