That would encourage murder.

People have killed for less money. Some ips are worth billions.

nayrt

Very, VERY few. Most creators make their most money in the first few years after publication, and relatively little as much as 20 years later.

...But if Person A killed Creator B, I'm not sure how that translates into Person A gaining control over Creator B's intellectual properties, especially if that control ended upon their death. All that would happen is that the work entered the public domain sooner.

And while there may be some fans that crazy, I'm thinking not a whole lot.

Well, also, like.... People having motives for murder is a thing that happens sometimes. Just because someone has a motive to murder, it doesn't mean that they will murder. If I make a will, it means I've given someone a motive to murder me. Doesn't mean we should outlaw wills.

If we go full conspiracy, let's say creator A wrote the next juggernaut and there's billions of dollars to be made. Megacorp Fox Disney-Warner wants to make a movie based on the book. They have a fair bit already lined up. The creator refuses. Now if Fox Disney-Warner wants a movie about the book, they'll have to wait until the creator dies. They're 40. Unless...?

Now there's motive for murder. If Fox Disney-Warner can make it look an accident, there's plenty of money to be made and they have resources for it.

...Okay, that actually would make some kind of sense, in a sick way.

I'd say "but surely that would never actually happen" but since there is serious ongoing discussion about whether the government may need to exhume a former president's first wife's grave to see if the coffin is full of classified documents, I'm starting to think this is a world where anything really is possible. :P

lmao

I think it would discourage murder - most murders are done by people close to the victim, and if you kill the author whose copyright brings in money, the money is over.
