Cdramas aren't for everyone, and it doesn't sound like it's your cup of tea. The weak female leads part is... yeah, that's a problem in the entire genre. I wouldn't rec Legend of Fei even if technically the female lead has the martial arts skills and it's her journey simply because it wasn't very good and definitely not Zhao Liying's best work. Who Rules the World is slightly better and has the advantage of a strong second female lead, but that's still mostly "good" in the context of cdramas as a whole.

Re: BL, I think Word of Honor was able to do a lot more than The Untamed, but I enjoyed both. Neither were without flaws, but I had fun with them anyway - and IMO, that's the attitude that helps when trying to watch cdramas. Accept that they're going to be flawed and occasionally ridiculous with ridiculous tropes and questionable special effects and see them as watchable junk food. If you can't do that, then the genre isn't really for you.
