That's so frustrating nonny. Sometimes people just aren't into things! I can't get into c-dramas either.

A (now former) friend of mine scolded me for not being into Bollywood films. :(

This is not the reason why we're no longer friends though! *laughs*

I'm not really into Cdramas, mainly because I don't like watching shows in general and I wasn't a huge fan of the few I tried (which were mainly the BL ones) but your commentary does sound pretty holier than thou. I get it gets annoying when people don't listen when you tell them "this is not for me" but just because you don't like them/don't see the appeal it doesn't mean they're objectively bad.

(Assuming the red additions to the flowchart was also written by OP, the black on the right sounds reasonable.)

I somehow completely overlooked the red text when I read the secret. Didn't even notice it until I saw your comment and thought, what red additions? Weird.

Eh, that length can certainly be an issue, I entirely understand, OP.

(Though I *did* learn to knit while watching subtitles, and that def. changed how much of them I'd watch.)

Cdramas aren't for everyone, and it doesn't sound like it's your cup of tea. The weak female leads part is... yeah, that's a problem in the entire genre. I wouldn't rec Legend of Fei even if technically the female lead has the martial arts skills and it's her journey simply because it wasn't very good and definitely not Zhao Liying's best work. Who Rules the World is slightly better and has the advantage of a strong second female lead, but that's still mostly "good" in the context of cdramas as a whole.

Re: BL, I think Word of Honor was able to do a lot more than The Untamed, but I enjoyed both. Neither were without flaws, but I had fun with them anyway - and IMO, that's the attitude that helps when trying to watch cdramas. Accept that they're going to be flawed and occasionally ridiculous with ridiculous tropes and questionable special effects and see them as watchable junk food. If you can't do that, then the genre isn't really for you.

I totally feel you on not being able to do other stuff while watching TV with subtitles. What Bong Joon-ho said about overcoming the "one-inch-tall barrier of subtitles" works for the movie theater where I'm already just looking at the screen anyway and have nowhere else to be, but isn't compatible with cooking or folding laundry at home. If I want to watch something with subtitles at home I need to specifically carve out some time for it.

Yeah and also... the whole "overcoming the one-inch-tall barrier of subtitles" is a bit iffy to me because I know plenty of people who are not fast readers (doubly so with English subs when their native language isn't English and subs ins their native language don't exist) and even I, even though I usually don't have any issues with following subs, sometimes can't read them all in Cdramas because they are FAST. So I KNOW a lot of people actually can't just ~overcome the one-inch-tall barrier of subtitles" and that's just regular people who aren't fast readers, not even people who have any more severe impairments.
