Where does this comparison even come from? They acted in such different eras of movie production, tropes, acting styles, etc., it wouldn't ever occur to me to compare the two. Actually, not positive I've ever seen Lon Chaney Sr, only Jr as the Wolf Man, and that was certainly not the best acting.

Lon Chaney Sr was a by far superior actor to his son. (He played the 1925 Phantom of the Opera, and other silent roles.)

I agree with you that it makes no sense to compare him to Robert Downey Jr though! Though RDJ did play a great Chaplin. Literally the only connection I can think of.
