Refresh my memory, please? The show got so boring during the later seasons, I barely remember anything about it anymore. How did they fail her?

this might be hyperbole and not what OP means, but this is what it felt like:

everything bones said she wanted for her life that was opposite of what booth wanted was ignored in favor of what booth wanted. like everything. it really felt like the show was saying if she weren't autistic a person who had such a scientific perspective, she would agree with him to begin with. it felt like she never was allowed to just be "right" in a conflict with booth, that she was always required to compromise her stance, whereas it felt like Booth NEVER did.

but I can't remember if that was accurate to the show, or just how it felt.

nayrt

That's my memory of it too. Especially after she became a mother.

Yup, this is how it felt to me, too. Hell, this is how it felt to me long before the most egregious stuff (apparently) happened. (I'd quit watching by then.)

Honestly, while there were parts of the show I liked and stuck around for, in my opinion the narrative had an underlying flavor of normativity about it, right from the beginning. That's not even a 'hindsight is 20-20' thing; I distinctly remember having conversations with my father (who is my partner in TV-watching) about how it gave me normative vibes, even in the early seasons.

you're absolutely right, it was very conservative in its norms too. like the way they treated Brennan and her dad with the implication that she couldn't have boundaries or had to forgive him, or that episode about faith where it went supernatural for no reason...sigh.

Pretty much everything meadowphoenix said, PLUS - she was happily child-free then Booth basically browbeat her into having a kid. YUCK.

I gave up on this show after they fucked over Zach so bad.

THIS

(Anonymous) 2022-08-25 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
That was such a terrible plot development, yeah.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-26 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Dammit, I had successfully forgotten about this until I decided to read through the comments.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-26 01:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Hard agree

(Anonymous) 2022-08-29 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
That was the season with the writers' strike, and I have never been able to decide if it was just terrible in general, or if it would have been better with like... the half-a-season of development to that plot point that was missed out on.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-25 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I gave up after what they did to Sweets like... nope.

(I mean, I'd have been also be super not interested in her as a mother so there was nothing for me in later seasons anyways.)

(Anonymous) 2022-08-25 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I gave up before then, but now I'm casually curious what they did to Sweets.

Make him turn out to be evil, or kill him horribly? (Or other?)

As others have said, the Zach thing pissed me off. I didn't stick around long enough to see Bones become a mother. I'm sure that would have annoyed me even more.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-25 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
(Is it a spoiler if the show ended years ago? Anyways, spoiler I guess?)

Second one.

IMO, the writing for her character was always pretty crap. IIRC the earlier seasons strongly telegraphed that she was autistic, though I don't think they ever came out and said it? So they'd have her acting like a robot, unable to process or understand other peoples' very human emotions, such as grief over the death of a loved one. She was brusque and flat even towards people she knew well and trusted.

And then they'd turn around and give her an amazing dating life where she was the life of the party with a string of hot guys who thought she was a Cool Girlfriend and... no. You don't act like an alien who's confused by human beings and emotions during your work hours and then become Miss Social Butterfly/Congeniality on the weekends.

I’m so glad I’m not the only one who felt this way. It’s one of the big reasons I tapped out early on the show.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-26 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and I wish I'd done the same. I knew then that the writing would be sloppy and that nobody cared about characterization or continuity and later episodes totally confirmed this.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-26 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
I think she was only "alien and confused" when it came to death, because she'd had such a close relationship with it her ENTIRE life. It's like someone saying something dear to you that has been beside you since childhood is bad, you tend to not Get It.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-26 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
That would be a far more sensitive and logical explanation than the show ever offered, IMO. It still doesn't make sense when they consistently portray her as being that way in normal, everyday interactions with other people such as her co-workers, but somehow transforming into this high-powered social queen in her sexual/romantic relationships.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-26 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
...I just... Isn't it a bit discriminatory to say that she can only be one way? I think that's what makes me uncomfortable.

I agree with this secret. They did her so dirty. I can't rewatch this show anymore.
