I would argue that. 18 is still a kid in so many ways. Hell, 21 is too.

My point is, if you want to argue that adulthood should start at 25, that's the argument that you should make. Personally, I think that's absurdly infantilizing. But at least it's direct: you're arguing for the thing that you believe.

I meant exactly what I said. I think it’s sad that kids are looking forward to joining OF the second it’s legal for them to do so. Meaning that when I hear my 15 year old sister and her friends talk about it, it makes me sad. But yes, I do also think 18 is too young for a lot of the things we throw at people. Military service, credit contracts, being tried as an adult, etc.

Are 15 year olds old enough to look forward to having sex?

Are 15 year olds old enough to look forward to having other kinds of jobs and careers?

Some 15 year olds dream of jobs and sex someday so I should just not be concerned that a kid who can’t remember not to put tin foil in the microwave is eagerly awaiting the day she can join OF? Sorry. Maybe you know a lot of 15 year olds fully cognizant of the potential consequences of a choice like that, but I haven’t met any.

DA

When I was 15 I daydreamed about all sorts of wild things I was going to do the second I turned 18. It's a fantasy, not a commitment. People change a lot in those years. Just because she likes the idea now doesn't mean she will then, so don't worry so much.

(I know many middle-aged people who occasionally forget you can't put metal in the microwave too, lol)

NA - Seconding this. Also, I'm 34 and I literally tried to cover a Pyrex bowl of rice with tinfoil to microwave it last week. In my defense, I'd never microwaved rice before, so naturally I was distracted by the newness (and probable foolhardiness) of the endeavor. XD

Having sex, yes. Distributing imagery on the internet permanently, not so much.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-27 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
One is objectively more impactful than the other?

(Anonymous) 2022-08-27 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
Which one, the mutually enjoyable physical activity with a loved one, or the worldwide circulation of your image whether you like it or not?

(Anonymous) 2022-08-27 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
DA

The one that can actually give you an STI or unwanted pregnancy (for certain genital matchups) or real physical injury, or the one that can't because it's all pictures on a screen and no one ever really touches you?

I think they're both fine, but you can look at it that way too.

+1000000 Well said!

credit contracts,

If you shut young adults out of credit, that basically excludes them from financial viability for independent living. Many teenagers absolutely NEED to start working on autonomy as soon as possible. Shutting 18-year-olds out of even starting to build credit adds so many years to their chances of escaping abusive family and even being considered to rent a place of their own.

being tried as an adult, etc.

18 is not too young to know right from wrong. If you postpone the age where people face full consequences indefinitely, then people will game that system to keep thinking shoplifting is just as cute at 22 as it was at 13, and also suggest that someone raped by a 19-year-old wasn't harmed as badly as someone raped by a 35-year-old.

There is a certain point where we have to understand that someone who was murdered by a 17-year-old is not any less dead than someone murdered by a 19-year-old. 18 seems about right.
