I wouldn't say Erik is a less sophisticated muse than Sweeney OP.

LOLOL. Yeah. As characters, Erik is definitely the more sophisticated!

I figure they meant the composers, Sondheim vs Lloyd Webber. There's a lot of Sondheim snobbery in musical theater fandom.

oooh, you're probably not wrong. as much as I dislike webber personally he's clearly just as good as sondheim.

I think it's fair to call Sondheim more musically sophisticated. Sweeney Todd plays constantly with variations on the Dies Irae theme. However, I love early ALW shows. Not everything has to be the height of musical sophistication. That's not what I personally love musicals for!

Yes, Sweeney Todd is typical of Sondheim's variation method of songwriting and varying methods of songwriting can be wonderful to listen to, I can agree with that!

I don't think you're giving Phantom enough credit, but as you say, that's fine.

Erik the character is more sophisticated than Sweeney. Erik the narrative device is arguably less so. The music is a toss-up.

However, Sweeney wins any hypothetical competition between the two solely based on the fact that ST’s bloodbath ending spares the rest of us from any ‘Love Never Dies’ style nonsense.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-29 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Hah, yes. If only the show had ended like the novel. Love Never Dies is a fucking travesty.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-29 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
They do a sequel called “Love Died All Over the Place” that’s just the aftermath of prior events and ends with vandals burning down the pie shop.

if you read it as a man fantasizing about his divorce in a way that makes him feel better, it's very funny.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-29 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahaha, I totally agree. It's ALW's self-insert fanfic.

Erik the narrative device is arguably less so.
Could you say more?

(Anonymous) 2022-08-29 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Sophisticated has multiple meanings. If we’re going with “cultured,” then Erik is ahead. If we’re going with “complex,” then, narratively speaking, Erik is a well-executed fairy tale trope. That’s not a criticism, by the way. It’s hard to tell a simple story well and it’s something that ALW excels at.

Thank you for this secret not involving the Johnny Depp version.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-28 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I love me some Phantom and E/C, but Lloyd Webber's track record is full of, well, plagiarized tracks. There's more obvious wholesale lifted stuff ie that Gates of Heaven song from Whistle Down the Wind = Jurassic Park, and Music of the Night = Come to Me, Bend to Me from Brigadoon and some aria from Girl of the Golden West.

But so far as Sweeney Todd and Phantom go, listen to "Not While I'm Around" and then "Angel of Music."

Also I think "My Friends" makes for a better sexual awakening song than Epiphany, but thanks for not mentioning the Tim Burton film even once.

I love seeing musical theater secrets, especially when they use the stage versions and not the movies, especially movies that don't do the shows justice. So go you, OP!

For you, OP: https://youtu.be/5aQ_uEEMPqE

I love this video! I love that song, and this is my favourite version of it.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-29 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
The energy is amazing, and I love Patti's evil little chuckle after "locksmith."

(Anonymous) 2022-08-28 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I am still one of the biggest E/C shippers of all time, and I like your secret, Nonny. Hearn is by far my favourite Sweeney Todd too.

Honestly wish I could turn my biggest musicals fandom secrets into fandom!secrets, but they're all things I'm sworn to the death never to tell anyone about. :(

(Anonymous) 2022-08-28 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
What on earth kind of life or death stuff happens in musicals? Or is this private lives of actors type stuff, in which case, thanks for respecting their privacy.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-29 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Things involving people's private lives, pretty much. And one or two mildly criminal things.

(Anonymous) 2022-08-29 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT--So long as it's not more James Barbour style assholery.

Still remember when he was cast as the Phantom and fans photoshopped giant black garbage cans in his place in every single promo photo, and also there was the thing where people were sending him bags of dicks--gummy candy ones, but still.

I've always sort of found the songs in Sweeney Todd sort of... ponderous? I dunno. There's something about them that just feels really heavy and I still struggle to this day to enjoy them even though I really want to because I love the story and stuff itself. :(

(Anonymous) 2022-08-29 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
LOVE George Hearn!
He's one of those broadway actors for me, where, if he's done a role, he's probably going to be my favorite no matter how good someone else's revival might be.
