Same here, sort of. For me it's because I'm only ever attracted to older characters and it's hotter to ship them with someone way younger.

i kinda went in the reverse-- when i was a teenager/early 20s i had a lot of older/younger ships, but now that i'm in my thirties anything new is generally both characters within ten years of eachother and definitely on the older side.

still look back at the OG agegap ships with nostalgia tho. those power dynamics are catnip to the id, mmm.

I've always liked age gap ships. I was more into them when I was younger than I am now, though.

I’m attracted to older men, so while I’ve always liked age gap ships, the ages keep moving up (with the younger character never far from my own age, cause I’m totally self inserting, lol).

Good post, OP!

I'm different from you in that I was always attracted to older people as a teenager. Teenagers have just never done it for me even when I was one. They still don't. But now in fiction, it's fascinating to explore using my memories of my teenage self (through the filter of charactes who aren't me) to delve into the psychology of that. And it's free to be hot AND problematic at the same time, because it isn't real.

Dude same.

I'm the opposite, when I was a teen I was into teen/adult ships because I liked the power-fantasy of being the object of an adults desire. But as I've gotten further and further away from being a teen those ships and teen characters in general hold no appeal for me anymore. I still like age-gap ships but the minimum age for the younger character has gone up with my own age.

OP

Re: all the people who commented saying basically, "I'm the opposite." I love you guys, but yeah, that's why I made this secret. Because it seems like everybody and their dog was into teen/adult content when they were a teen but can't/don't enjoy it anymore now that they're older. That is the standard line when it comes to teen/adult pairings.

And like, objectively I get it. It makes perfect sense. I just...couldn't relate less. I had no thirst for adults as a teen. (I had no thirst for other teens either, but I understood that I was "supposed" to have thirst for other teens.) Unlike when I was a teen, as an adult I can resonate heavily with both the characters in age gap ships, and that's a big part of what makes them so compelling to me. If I couldn't relate to the adult half just as much as the teen half, I think I'd probably just be bored. *shrugs*

On a separate note, I know I didn't specify in my secret, but I'm actually not into underage/adult, personally. So I get why the warning got put on this secret and I respect it, but also, it's an incorrect presumption that teenage/adult must equal underage. For me, the fact that statutory rape is a line the adult character won't even think about crossing is vital to my enjoyment of the pairing. Because I need to be able to believe that, however problematic and ill-advised the relationship is and no matter how ethically dubious the actions of the adult character are for even going there at all, the characters do genuinely love each other. And I can't do that if the adult character is willing to commit statutory rape, because in that case it's clearly all about them and what they want, and they are narcissistic enough to think they should get what they want regardless of the literal law saying, "Yo, that's rape, that sixteen-year-old cannot meaningfully consent to you."

YKINMKATIO. Underage gets a pass from me though.

Well, it's not surprising that the default is to assume teen/adult means underage unless you do say the teen is an also an adult. I mean, that's still... adult/adult, just with one of the adults being a teenager. And from your last part I assume you consider adult to be 18 or over, even though some people would consider 16 or 17 to be an adult depending on the laws where they live so at that point why not just say you like younger/older?

But imo I don't think it has to be statutory rape in a story because stories don't have to follow real moral conventions. They can make a reality where underage teenagers can consent. If they're written as truly loving each other, then they truly love each other and it's not rape even if that couldn't be the case in reality. I believe that such stories should be discussed with actual teenagers so that they know this could never happen in real life, but that's another issue.

I consider every age with "teen" on the end of it to be a teenager. That doesnt mean a nineteen-year-old isnt also an adult, as well as eighteen-year-olds in many places where the age of majority is eighteen. But a 18-19yo/40yo ship is, by definition a teenage/adult ship and I will refer to it as such.

It's true that you could make a reality (historical or alternate) where age of consent laws were different or didnt exist, but none of my ships exist in such a reality, and also, in a reality where AOC laws didnt exist, there is definitely still an age at which I could no longer believe the relationship was remotely viable--unless you also create a world where ages dont developmentally mean the same thing they mean for humans. But if you're going to write a character who's 15 but 15 for their species doesnt mean the same thing as 15 for humans, then to me it's like, what's the point in making them "15" at all?

Cool cool. I'm all for warnings, and I prefer to err on the side of better safe than sorry anyway.
