saaaaame. i love the *bones* of the worldbuilding and would love to see what someone else would do with it, and the cast of characters are interesting enough for the source material, but oh wowzers the fans. you either say it's the most stunning piece of media ever created in the scifi atmosphere or you dieeeeee.

I don't think people who like the episode ignore the rape element. They like it in spite of that. Because the rest of the episode is really good and really clever and excellent. The way that the episode downplays the moral seriousness of the rape is a major flaw with it, but people still like the episode despite that. And not just for MSR reasons, either - I am basically a noromo and I still like it overall.

Okay, then don't forgive him. I think the major sticking point with the other half of the fandom, so to speak, is that c!Dream is /also/ a victim of abuse after this point. Neither abuse makes the other okay, obviously.

And as long as side-eyeing other fans is all you do, who cares.

To be fair I used to frequent 4chan in the 00's but back then loli/shota was considered just a common hentai kink on the same level as gore or tentacles so nobody made a fuss about it being some slippery slope into actual crimes (which it ain't). God do I miss those times now that fandom has gotten batshit pedo-obsessed even wrt adult characters.

The way I see it is that soulless, vampire Spike went out to get his soul back out of bitterness and spite and "fine, I'll do it THIS way then"--but the act of getting his soul back changed him into, you know, a souled vampire. It was Spike-with-a-soul who said that he wanted to be "the kind of man who would never" and henceforth was that.

If Angel and Angelus can be judged differently based on soul status--and treatment of Buffy with and without a soul--then so should Spike.
