As someone who adores Spike, I actually agree with you. He absolutely intended to get the chip out--whether his subconscious agreed, ehhh, but his wording IIRC was something like "make me the man I once was", which could have been pre-chip, but the magic he sought out meant as "lol okay here's your soul, idiot."

the last bit is "make me what i was so buffy can get what she deserves", which is the wooliest bullshit ever and totally contrived so that when they finally made their mind up they could play it either way
