this is why the left keeps losing elections

(Anonymous) 2022-09-03 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
That is a lot of power you are crediting to Marvel Studios there.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-03 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
???Can you elaborate

(Anonymous) 2022-09-03 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
short version, they can't accept that other people have what might be valid criticisms of the state of play because they've already decided that it's somethingism

so remain have never worked out why they lost the brexit vote because they think they already know the answer to be racism against immig'ants (there were a lot more reasons than that) and trump got in under similar circumstances - the dems spent four years attacking him and his supporters as racist loons, admittedly partly because a lot of them were racist loons but also because it meant they didn't have to look in the mirror

this secret is the view of someone who assumes that the only reason people have for criticising the marvels is sexism, when it's entirely feasible that there are other actual issues with the properties outside of that, and it's that glib dismissal that loses elections

(i have seen neither)

(Anonymous) 2022-09-03 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Wat?

(Anonymous) 2022-09-03 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, you think the Democrats are the left. That explains a lot.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-03 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Spends a lot of time insisting that the average Democrat politician is a raging violent baby killing feminazi family destroying America hating communist who is going to get us all killed in our beds...and will then turn around and mock those same politicians for not "doing anything" as soon as anything goes slightly wrong. I think one reason for this is that they have an authoritarian "might makes right" worldview, in which they assume that the person who has won the power will demonstrate that by taking immediate, aggressive, extreme control over everything without consent, always choosing the simplest, most destructive solution to any problem and that not doing so is weak. So they're afraid of what happens when the other side wins anything. And confused at the other side showing "weakness" by having manners, showing respect and following the law, and you know...stuff like that.

Republicans have been doing this for a very very long time. Portraying Democrats as scary family hating commies to frighten their voter base, and then when Democrats are revealed as what they have always, in reality, actually been instead, portraying them as weak and ineffectual. My mom's a Republican, my dad's an "independent" who hasn't voted for a Democrat since Carter, and they both fall for this all.the.time. Meanwhile, since the GOP has become steadily more extreme over the years, the Democrats have never felt like it was safe to risk being actually leftist and are more like the centrist party most of the time. But we only have two parties because every single major election is so vital to the future of the nation that neither party can risk allowing someone who might upset the balance of votes because each of the two major parties believes that if they don't win, people are literally going to die ARGGGHGHH.

Depressingly accurate.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-04 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
You're being pedantic and you know it. It's entirely within reason to call the party that's as far left as you can get into government in its governed country "the left."

(Anonymous) 2022-09-03 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
You sound British, and white.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-03 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
More gammon coloured, I think, than white.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-03 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Republicans have won the national popular vote once in the last 32 years.

If you want to bitch about your political grievances with people, then just do it. Don't do this butter-won't-melt-in-my-mouth stuff about how you're so sad that the left doesn't agree with your strategic wisdom.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-03 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
The left rarely gets to put a candidate up for elections. This comment is stupid.

What? Democrats may be closer to the center, but they are still on the left side.

they're to the left of republicans, they are not on the left of most categories of political thought (economics, foreign policy, sovereign structure), none of the political power in US is.

They are to the left of the political center. Not very left at all, but still a little left.

this accuracy tho

Some people use "leftist" to describe a person left of the exact middle of the imagined political spectrum. In this sense, Democrats are left of center.

Some people use "leftist" to mean, like, "opposed to capitalism" and view it as something distinct from liberalism. In this sense, Democrats are mostly not leftist, other than the ~5 to 10% of the party that's democratic socialist. Mostly they're progressive liberals.

Hmmm. That first definition makes more sense to me. Leftist meaning to the left vs. to the right. I'd use other terms like socialist to describe those to the far left (which, for the record, I think I'm more in line with).

I'm sure that made sense when you tried to put it together in your head.

Huh. Here I was thinking it was all the voter suppression and gerrymandering Republicans have engaged in over the last thirty years. Learn something new every day I guess.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-04 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm an Aussie and even to me "this is why the left keeps losing elections" is a very ignorant comment. Random internet person, if another random internet person across the world can see the absolute flaws in that sentence, you need to rethink things. (For one thing, even I know that the democrats consistently win the popular vote and republicans win due to gerrymandering.)
Seriously, you're coming across as a laughable idiot. Do better.
As for original OP, agreed.

I've noticed, that Never Have I Ever is also about an excitably nerdy teenage South Asian heroine and her quirky immigrant family. Devi's not Muslim and her family's from India not Pakistan, but I think the main difference is really that NHIE is not a superhero story based on comic books. It isn't being watched by people with a sense of entitlement that every story in their genre must always center them and them only and hate when anyone tries anything new.
