Right there with you. Although not a fan of Elf either (used to be, got sick of it). Die Hard, Krampus, Nightmare Before Christmas (both a Halloween and Christmas movie), Carol, and the Star Wars OT are my go-to.

Big YUP on Die Hard -- a Christmas Eve tradition in my world!

I generally don't like Christmas films either but am fine watching things like Home Alone 1 and 2. Probably because I was a kid when those were out and there's the nostalgia factor. Die Hard fine, Elf fine. I even don't mind The Grinch (Jim Carrey one) too much because my best friend and I used to watch that for a laugh and built up a bunch of in-jokes over it. Probably a couple of others I'm missing.

I'm not a big fan of Christmas overall tbh (lots of bad memories, pressure to be living your best life) but don't really vocalise it much because I feel like everyone (who loves Christmas to the point of spurting tinsel everywhere) assumes you're just one of those people who makes hating Christmas a personality trait and they won't entertain the idea that you maybe don't have the best memories or associations with that time of year.

There are only two good Xmas movies. Die Hard and A Christmas Story.

I really, really hate a Christmas Story. It is tied with It's a Wonderful Life for my least favorite Christmas movies.

NAYRT
Can I ask why? Oversaturation and/or as movies they are just bad?

It's a Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street are my 69 year old mother's favorite movies. Every Sunday in December. Every fucking Christmas. Without fail.

The only Christmas movies I enjoy nowadays is Muppet Christmas Carol (and that's really just because I love muppet movies in general) And The Nightmare Before Christmas (Which is really a mix between Christmas and Halloween.)

I also have a dim view on Christmas as a whole for my own reasons, it's the worst time of year for me. I dread it, and I feel like exhaling in relief once December is over. But god forbid you ever express this opinion in real life.

Yes, teasingly calling me Scrooge never gets old./s

Ooo, yes, forgot Muppet Christmas Carol. That one is great.

Damn right it is. It still makes me laugh, and it's amazingly one of the truest-to-the-texts Carols out there. So many Carols are like "He's bad because he doesn't like Christmas" when it's supposed to be "HE'S BAD BECAUSE HE'S LITERALLY KILLING PEOPLE BY BEING SO CHEAP, GREED IS THE ISSUE"

Anyway, now I have a desire to listen to the music. ~We're Marley and Marley...~

I only count Lethal Weapon.

May I recommend The Ice Harvest?

I love that it’s quite a bleak Christmas movie – set at Christmas, deeply cynical about people’s goodwill and family relationships… and yet it manages to have a vaguely happy ending.

I have come to see that I love Christmas and Christmas movies because it's when I can shamelessly be happy and cheerful and feel all charmed and magical. But I've also come to understand that it can feel really isolating if there is no one around to share/bounce off my cheerful moods, and then I start to hate Christmas movies because I feel extremely sad and lonely that I don't have anyone to go home to or to celebrate a nice sweet Christmas with like I see on the screen.

Like, I kind of hate the whole "Oh you're down on your life because you feel alone? Reach out to the people in your life because they're likely lonely too. The reward is you reached out to them and made the connection" message. In theory, it is rewarding to give service to others. But IDK I feel like I've a hardened heart because there have been maybe one too many times I felt like my attempts at making a connection was taken for granted and I'm feeling like giving up. The work and effort aren't worth it.
For example, I used to be the one who would call up my friends and organize our Christmas celebrations as well as be the one to organize a family Christmas celebration with my family (parents and siblings), and then at some point my friend group died out because everyone's priorities went elsewhere (and I totally get that) and my family just seemed to sit back and wait for me to literally do everything. There was one Christmas where I watched my siblings all exchange a bunch of gifts and I think I got like, one present from one of my brothers. It's not so much about the number of gifts but it was just this feeling of like I didn't matter and the efforts of me organizing the family holidays celebrations went unappreciated/unacknowledged. I'm just the middle child of the family too, not the parent (but my parents suck so you know...I guess I shouldn't be surprised that my siblings don't know how to prioritize/appreciate others) Just....being reminded that I don't belong anywhere sucks ass.

I like movies that make me happy, but Christmas movies usually give me a feel more of forced happiness as a veneer.

AYRT
I can definitely agree, especially if the quality is bad and most Christmas movies are cheap cash grabs. I have my short list of Christmas movies I like but I can grow tired of them and some years I steer away from Christmas related media because I really just am not in the mood for the Christmas focused cheerfulness.

Die Hard and The Ref. Everything else is banned from my house.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-04 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
THE REF!!! Fucking fantastic movie.

Never heard of the Ref. But since in looking it up I noticed that Spacey was in it, I won't be checking it out.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-05 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, for a while after the news broke, I couldn't watch it. But damnit I love that movie, and he's only a small part of the team that made it. I just pretend he's dead.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-05 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I think both Gremlins and Lethal Weapon take place over Christmas, so you could give those a try.

Hmm.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-05 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Most of the Hallmark, Lifetime, and the like holiday movies are a little too syrupy for me.

I like some fairly sweet and sentimental Christmas movies - Home Alone, While You Were Sleeping, Love Actually, and the original animated How the Grinch Stole Christmas are pretty regular holiday viewing, and I usually catch A Christmas Story and/or It’s a Wonderful Life on television, and The Santa Clause and The Holiday are okay. I could never get into Elf.

Some with darker overtones that I like every once in a while, are The Family Stone and Mixed Nuts. I liked The Ref, but I can’t watch it anymore (damn Kevin Spacey). Trapped in Paradise is weird. I disliked The Night Before a lot.

For action movies, Die Hard is a favorite along with Die Hard 2. Other action movies set around Christmas that I like are Batman Returns and The Long Kiss Goodnight.

Then, of course there’s Gremlins.

Re: Hmm.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-05 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I like While You Were Sleeping because it holds the family connections that they made as important as the romantic connection. (As far as I remember -- it's been a long while since I saw it.)

Try "The Lion in Winter" for a change of pace.

"Well, what shall we hang... the holly, or each other?"

(Anonymous) 2022-09-05 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I love that movie!
