[Our Flag Means Death]

I know, he's a sweetie and Stede is such a dick to him!

On that note, Stede is sorta a bitch to everyone (except generally Ed) despite him trying to be nice and generous, and that feels quite fundamental to his character (especially with how the show ends with him underestimating how much his actions can hurt someone). Still, the fandom so often paints him as an inherent ball of sunshine or beacon of kindness.

Is it really that bad? I haven't watched this yet but I've been wanting to, and I've heard nothing about this character's existence. Now I'm not sure I want to watch it anymore. Is he someone the viewer is supposed to feel bad for and the think the characters are unfair to, or are we supposed to hate him and laugh at his pain because that's what he exists for?

Bit of both, I would say. He's definitely a comedic character, in a show that's already largely comedic. But there's a particular moment that wouldn't hit nearly as hard if the viewer wasn't fundamentally endeared to him, and didn't recognize that he is sweet and deserves kindness.

It's like comedic violence but the character is so simple it comes off kind of mean, basically.

Neither. The "mean" moment is when they're planning a scary show, he wants to sing and got told it's not scary. That's it. He get to sing anyway. In a crew of 10 peoples, he's one of the less used.
