It's pretty clear that Stannis ordering Shireen burned is where the books are going, too.

DA - On the wildly small chance we ever get Winds I bet the reaction has already made GRRM change it, if it was ever his plan. Remember when last we saw them Shireen was nowhere near Stannis with her mother in a castle on the wall.

Not necessarily. He doesn't strike me as an author who changes things just because some fans don't like them. Also, Stannis' whole trajectory has been burning his life down in pursuit of what he thinks is his right, egged on by Melisendre.
