I don't think there'd be anything wrong in doing that.

So outside of filing off the serial numbers, is the blowback really all that's keeping you from sharing on AO3? I mean, maybe for every 10 haters, you'd have 2 people who really like the fic -- but obviously it's up to you!

An alternative somewhere between that is posting it on AO3 or Wattpad as an inspired by X, which is practically tantamount to just tagging it with AU. It's all up to you OP. Now I'm curious as to what's the fandom and what's the change -- like how drastic was it? A good old gender switch one or both of the characters? I'm curious, since you feel it's distant enough from the original work -- would it draw parallels if you were familiar with the source material?

If it's so detached that changing the names makes it unrecognizable, go ahead and change the names. If you're worried about it getting called a knock-off, a) get the opinion of someone else familiar with the original's canon, b) figure out if it is similar enough to trigger a copyright suit, and c) ask yourself how much you really -care-.

Did you change an m/m pairing to an f/m pairing or did you change the race of a main character?

Good guess.

I changed a m/m pairing to f/m.

If you want to post it as a fanfic in the fandom but not face criticism as a fandom person, you can always post the fic Anonymous. People might still get upset and leave comments, but at least it'll be directed at anon you and not you with a name/known account.

Publishing it by filing the fandom serial numbers off isn't a big deal IMO

I think, do whatever you want OP! If you have a story you want to tell, share it please!

If the only thing that would make the fandom clear are the names, then it's probably not a good fanfic anyways. That does NOT mean that it's a bad story at all tho, so self publish away!
