It absolutely happened 20 years ago! But it was tempered a lot by people excited to connect with other fans and that happy part of fandom is absent in most spaces now.

also, modern social networks are designed in a way to encourage people to get pissed off at each other

(Anonymous) 2022-09-09 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
DA I think this is a big part of the problem.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-10 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
And 20 years ago, people were posting on message boards not social media, so it may have been easier to just not notice.

This is a big part of it. 20 years ago I was active on Star Wars fanboards and had managed to never encounter the subset of fanboys who were dedicated to shitting on everything about the prequels. They were outliers, you had to specifically find a thread started for the purpose of hating on things other than Jar-Jar and make an effort to read far enough to care to respond. Hate was there but it was easier to avoid. Now, social media serves up piping fresh hate because some algorithm somewhere saw that you mentioned Star Wars once and now all the hot controversial takes on it are getting all the hits so here, why don't you also click and get in on the hate? I fucking despise social media for that. I want to regain even just the facade of choice and not all the worst things being recommeded directly to me, repeatedly, because I used a keyword once.

It definitely happened back then too, but it seemed less noticeable.

There has been at least one study showing that if someone is an asshole online, they're an asshole in real life, too.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-10 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, sometimes. Some folks are great at masking what a piece of shit they really are.

I remember it happening 20 years ago.

Not sure to what degree, but I know it happened because I used to be one of those horrible raging assholes. Hopefully, these are just young folks who need to grow up.

Eh.

It happened 20 years ago, just the internet wasn't quite as interconnected as it is now. It happened 25 years ago. It probably happened as soon as there was a certain amount of anonymity on the internet.

Some people are like that, and they have probably always existed. I mean, I've read really insulting messages on rest stop restroom stall walls - what is that? Who are these people that decide they want to spend time and effort insulting random people that use that restroom?

It happened before the Internet or anonymity. There were certainly people who acted that way in the fanzine days of science fiction fandom.

Yep. There's a reason the phrase All Fandom Was Plunged Into War exists.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-10 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Or the term "fugghead".

*snrk*

You have the right of it.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-10 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. People have always sucked but internet people sucked less.

twenty years ago I got my journalfen account.

All of the above comments, but I also think it wasn't as dispersed, nor also as legion-like. Like I think the ability to have spaces where it wasn't as much and also to leave spaces where it was a lot is gone (though I will say tumblr is easier to avoid certain attitudes without it being completely dead imo).

It happened 20 years ago - I've been in fandom 28 years and it was there from the start. But there was a lot less deliberate crossing the streams by social media - if someone was being an aggro dick about Fandom A, you'd just avoid those spaces or ignore their posts, and if you weren't in that fandom it had to be really amazing wank for you to hear about it. Now, Twitter and Tumblr spread toxic shit across every single fandom.

I'm an oldie who has been kicking around in fandom spaces for 30+ years. There have always been assholes wanting to squash any enjoyment other's got out of fandom but there were not so many active fans in those days, and less chance of retaining any anonymity if they were assholes. They also had to wait weeks/months for responses to their vitriol (snailmail!) unless made in person at conventions.

The growth of the internet marked a change as now (hundreds of) thousands of new fans could become active in fandom daily. They joined the bulletin boards, then blogs, tumblr, twitter and realized they could hide behind their computers and be assholes AND get responses in minutes/seconds. Instant gratification.

I've been very fortunate that I have managed to avoid most of those toxic people during my time in fandom - sadly not all!
