Honestly, that's extremely fair. It's a fucking intense story and tapping out is incredibly reasonable.

(Also, just to note, this has major spoilers for Sandman, as well as the suicide trigger warning).

Comment OP here and I appended a note with a spoiler warning under the secret comment, sorry I didn't add it in time.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-09 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
They put the worst bit of Calliope offscreen, so they might do it for that story too.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-09 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, a lot of it is already offscreen, no? IIRC they never come right out and say that's what happened.

But at the same time, I don't think they can really change the underlying nature of the story.

BIG FUCKING SPOILERS

(Anonymous) 2022-09-10 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT, but comment OP here and Morpheus takes Death's hand on the page. I mean, they don't show a lifeless corpse flopping around unless you count the body(?) on the bier that appears when they lay the winding sheet on it, so the covered and wrapped body is all you see unless you count his head(? sort of?) affixed to the prow of the funeral boat for a couple panels

But if you mean, they don't show a "traditional" suicide where he turns a weapon on himself or takes poison or something... this is more suicide by cop/Furies. He's definitely shown setting in motion the events that lead to his death, if not when he goes literally seeking Destruction, then when he agrees to Orpheus's price.

I have two hopes that the show will be less... I guess less brutal.

One is that the Fates and Calliope refer to Orpheus as already dead. So is it an Overture/Dream of a Thousand Cats thing and Dream retroactively making it so Orpheus died when the maenads ripped into him was already always true, and only he remembers otherwise? Or do the Fates somehow still come after him for it? He can't kill Orpheus if he's already dead on the show.

This could be the set up for some show-only thing where Morpheus doesn't actually want to die--not that he necessarily wants to die in the comics, but he can't see other options--but instead is just killed. If they go full Hollywood it could be he tries to save Daniel or something, but I seriously doubt Gaiman would change the story so Morpheus unambiguously wants to live and survive.

Two, I'm not a Dream/Hob shipper; I like them okay but so far I don't ship anything much on the show or in the comics. But if the show gets that far and expands on Hob's dream to make it less ambiguous that Morpheus survived as a dream, even if he's not Dream anymore, I think I could handle the rest. Even if I cry buckets.

I'm just going off memory here, but my recollection is that they don't explicitly come out and say that Morpheus intentionally set in motion the chain of events that led to his death - in other words, that he chose to commit suicide. In particular, that it's implied, but not stated, that he was the one who arranged for the kidnapping of Daniel, which was a necessary linkage in the chain.

Again I'm just going off memory and it's totally possible I'm forgetting crucial details. But that's what I had in mind.

NA

IIRC I think he does eventually figure out what's happening, but it's too far along to really do anything about it. And also that it's something he sets off subconsciously, bc I think I remember Death giving him shit for that.

Thanks for making my comment into a secret, OP!

I hear you OP. Even without the suicide/death-seeking aspect of it, I am torn between wanting that epic, complicated story and also wanting the Matthew/Corinthian buddy cop road trip, and very much not wanting to see Dream die on my telly screen.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-10 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Comment OP here and it's not his death I'm put off by, exactly, it's the whole "change or die" became "tried to change, wasn't enough, can't do this anymore, so the only option left is death" part. That his death was inevitable because he had other choices but couldn't/wouldn't take them.

But as a story, the whole thing is fantastic. I'm just a wuss.

Very valid. I had the same issue with the ending of The Good Place.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-10 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT--The Good Place didn't bother me, I think because nobody herded themselves to where all their choices were bad ones, or was in denial about it.

They had nearly infinite choices, and the chance to play them all out before choosing to stop existing as individuals, or make other choices, like Tahani.

Their choices weren't born out of fear or misery, no one died in their defense or as collateral damage. And, idk, in a hypothetical situation where their infinite afterlife was real, I don't know that I'd ever choose to give it up.

Morpheus' choice felt way closer to actual suicide.

I am pretty sure if we get this series they are going with the plot. It's a major part of a comic.
I understand not wanting to see it, but I actually love the tragedy of it. I think not only humanity of Daniel, but og Morpheus character growth allowed Dream to change.

also I am having too much fun already with people being mad at Daniel being mixed-race

(Anonymous) 2022-09-10 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
Comment OP here and I am all over making racists (and homophobes) mad. And I'm sure if they get the chance to finish the series they'll follow the original plot, especially since Gaiman is rightfully staying involved.

I'm not a Hob/Morpheus shipper, but I just hope they really lean in to Hob's dream being a true one. Maybe even show Morpheus finding Hob in the waking world as obviously not Dream of the Endless anymore.

I do feel like the first season at least has been... kinder? than the comics. I described Morpheus as "a faster learner, especially emotionally," than in the comics, but it's not just that. Even John Dee is less one note evil madman. The Corinthian buys Jed chicken fingers instead of locking him in the trunk. Maybe Hob's dream will be less bittersweet, too.

On the other hand, Gregory doesn't die in the comics, but it's not a violent death in the show. Maybe any added deaths will just be played for maximum tearjerking pathos... *dodges dodgeball*

(Anonymous) 2022-09-10 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
DA

I do see what you mean as the show being kinder, absolutely. All your examples plus John doesn't kill Rosemary and he gives her his protection amulet.

Jessamy tho. *weeps*

(Anonymous) 2022-09-10 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT--Justice for Jessamy! (Also kind of sad we never hear her talk; I'm guessing the writers thought it would break the dramatic tone of the first episode.)

I AM a shipper, so this would be lovely on top of being lovely.
Yeah, show is much more kinder and nuanced. As much as I miss surreal quality of the comic I actually love the changes. And I love your ideas, they sound plausible.
(the Wake is so pretty though)
