Based on 10

Who are your least favorite main characters?

Mike Wheeler. Jonathan is fine to me, honestly, I wish the writers had more ideas for what to do with his character but he's tolerable and I like the actor.

Mike is just aggravating and useless.

Ted Mosby. There are others I dislike, but none tops Ted freaking Mosby.

Will Halstead would be second probably.

Xander Harris is somewhere on that list. So is Poe Dameron.

I do not understand the hatred for Ted Mosby.

He thinks his priorities and goals are the only right goals to have and everyone should have them. He's really creepy to Robin and also to the other women he dates while still having feelings for Robin.

Mariner from Lower Decks, and Burnham from Discovery. And I am not happy about not liking either of them. I hate them, but at the same time I passionately want the writing to be better so I can actually like them.

RDJ as Iron Man. I just found him to be a douche, and not in the entertaining kind of way. Also, and on the rival side of the fence, Tyler Hoechlin as Superman. He's such a shallow and unemotive version of the character. I know that Tyler can do better, and I know that Superman can be a surprisingly deep character, so why is his version so steeped in dull surprise?

Wei Wuxian, good fucking lord lmao. I know he's young when we first meet him(meant to be a teen sure, but when played by an adult the disconnect between his face and his actions was hard to reconcile), but even with that context he annoyed the ever loving fuck out of me and I kept being told he'd get better but for me he just didn't. I don't quite hate him, but I do heavily dislike him and would have rated the show higher if he hadn't dragged it down for me.

Alistair from Dragon Age. It was so tiresome watching the fanbase cream themselves over him when he was a self-righteous hypocrite.

Gwen Cooper from Torchwood. I wanted someone to shoot her about three episodes in.

Oh god, you've unlocked the memories of rage I had towards her. Christ she was awful.

Re: Based on 10

Oh god yes. Like, everyone in the show definitely had their faults/issues/dumbassery, but the fact that the narrative painted Gwen as ~perfect representation of all that is good left in the world~ and then the stuff she did... it was like, "No ma'am, I do not subscribe to this newsletter."

Sakura Kinomoto. She's boring and yet she's the fan favorite. Why are y'all fawning over the generic genki girl protag when you have so many characters with personalities and stories that are actually interesting right there next to her?

spike from btvs

he was amazing as a recurring / guest character but he should never, ever, ever have been promoted to main

Lady Mary in Downton Abbey. Damn, I hated her.

Ron Weasley (Harry Potter) - I don't hate him, but I don't really like him.

Matthew Brock (NewsRadio) - He always bothered me, but every rewatch it gets worse. It doesn't help that Andy Dick does his best to live up to his last name.

Steve Sanders (Beverly Hills, 90210) - I didn't like him from episode 1 and that never got better. I was annoyed every time he got screentime.

Ted Mosby (How I Met Your Mother) - He was okay the first season, but wow, his character just kept getting more and more insufferable.

Lana Lang (Smallville) - Every single time they focused on her, the show just went dull and plodding and it became a chore to watch. I quit watching after a few seasons, so maybe it got better.

We have the same hate-taste, hah.

Adding River Song to the pile. Mary Sue energy for light-years, I still cringe.

Almost all shonen anime/manga main characters. I like shonen as a genre but almost without fail, even in the ones I think are worth watching, I hate the main male character and only tolerate them because the rest of the cast is good.

When there's an exception and I actually don't hate the male lead, it generally means I am going to get really, really into that fandom.

First thing that immediately comes to mind is Get Backers. It's debatable whether Ban or Ginji is "the lead", but I like them both.

Kenshin was another, though uh... nowadays we kind of try to forget that. (Which is too bad because I really, really loved the character of Kenshin.)

Tiger & Bunny... I'm not sure if it is technically shonen? It has some of the trappings, but... kinda varies. But if it counts, that's another.

I feel like there are others I'm forgetting about at the moment...

DA God, Kenshin’s such a great character, but it’s hard to separate the art from the artist with that one.

Miaka from Fushigi Yuugi. I absolutely loathed her and was turned off from any sort of shoujo for quite some time because of her. A whole bag of hair would have been smarter AND infinitely better as a character compared to her. It's been over twenty five years and I still hate her.
