right this is an important point in principle and rooting for the bad guys is not intrinsically bad, especially when it's bad guys like the empire and the sith who are fucking cool and have cool armor and force powers and stuff

but also, at the same time, a lot of the people in question do actually suck

I mean... yeah they do but boy have I seen shitty, sucky people who root for the Rebellion/the Jedi etc. so your alignment to fictional political factions is not necessarily a great indicator for anything.
