They're very very very pretty, they're aesthetically rich and detailed and have a distinctive and classical aesthetic style, the best ones are also thematically rich, and they have classic, well-worn narratives and characters that have a broad appeal to wide audiences. It's not hard to figure out what makes people love them. People love classics and Ghibli movies are modern classics. And there's a wide variety of different variations on the style so everyone can find a Ghibli movie that appeals to them.

To be honest I never really understood why people call Ghibli movies pretty. The animation style seems rather generic to me. I agree they are aesthetically rich and the stories are well-worn narratives, like you said, which I find gives the movies an almost comforting feel when watching them. But I wouldn't call them pretty.

Well, there's no use arguing about taste, I guess. I don't know! I find them really pretty, I think they're very clean and nostalgic and beautiful. I think there's a reason that Ghibli cityscapes and Ghibli landscapes and Ghibli food pictures are so popular on social media.

Maybe that's it - when I think of Ghibli movies I mostly think of the characters rather than the landscapes and food. I agree that the latter are very vibrant, they're just not what comes to mind to me when talking about Ghibli animation.

... it's no more generic than Disney animation?

This is true.

I mean, I find Disney animation generic too, at least if we're talking about the princess movies. So that checks out?
