They're very very very pretty, they're aesthetically rich and detailed and have a distinctive and classical aesthetic style, the best ones are also thematically rich, and they have classic, well-worn narratives and characters that have a broad appeal to wide audiences. It's not hard to figure out what makes people love them. People love classics and Ghibli movies are modern classics. And there's a wide variety of different variations on the style so everyone can find a Ghibli movie that appeals to them.

To be honest I never really understood why people call Ghibli movies pretty. The animation style seems rather generic to me. I agree they are aesthetically rich and the stories are well-worn narratives, like you said, which I find gives the movies an almost comforting feel when watching them. But I wouldn't call them pretty.

For whatever reason, a lot of kids who "didn't watch anime" growing up still watched these movies. So they loved what they saw as unique.

You sound American and white

(Anonymous) 2022-09-17 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
white Americans love Ghibli lol

(Anonymous) 2022-09-17 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
So do you, TBH.

Few things scream 'middle class white American' more than pointing at someone who has revealed literally nothing about themselves bar a disinterest in a couple of movies, and immediately jumping to 'middle-class white American'.

Please, I beg of anyone and everyone to retire this joke. It's gotten painful to see so often on here.

Probably going to get shot for this but I liked Spirited Away except for the main kid whom I thought was super obnoxious. All she seemed to do was scream, fall down and hold her arms up like Cornholio.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-17 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I really disliked that, too. I've been told that's normal for child characters in anime, and I don't watch much anime so I wouldn't know... but damn, that's annoying.

my brother in christ, I don't think you know the meaning of this word. Ghibli movies have the reputation *because* they have a very unique style/stories. also, implying Princess Mononoke is about a "young girl on a fantasy adventure" lmao smh, this is just sad, I see why this is a secret

(Anonymous) 2022-09-17 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)

Boring aesthetics and boring stories. They just appeal to the broadest audience. I only like Howl's Moving Castle and it's an adaptation of a better book so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

(Anonymous) 2022-09-17 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
DA
Agreed. I feel bad for not enjoying Ghibli films, being as invested in animation as I am... but... yeah. They're just so boring from a narrative standpoint.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-17 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like this take only really makes sense if you ignore a huge portion of Ghibli/Miyazaki's works and instead focus exclusively on a relatively narrow segment of their output (basically Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle, and to a lesser extent Princess Mononoke)

(Anonymous) 2022-09-18 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
I have prejudice towards Miyazaki mostly because I dislike Howl as an adaptation. This book was so dear to me and I hate war subplot in anime so much.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-18 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I love the book, so it's actually my least favorite Ghibli anything.

Princess Mononoke is wonderful, and probably my favorite, though this made me realize I've never actually seen Kiki's somehow.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-17 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
They're really good at doing people.

Also, I think when they started up a lot of anime was shouty shonen action stories, which isn't to everyone's taste, and they dug in with a brand of storytelling where quiet scenes and visually rich landscapes weren't just allowed but expected. Many of them, like Princess Mononoke, have characters where there's not a clear right and wrong, and some audiences like subtlety.

And they're strong in female characters (as real people, not just romance-objects) and that, also, could be hard to find. It's still hard to find, sometimes.

So... they established a brand as, 'you can find what you're looking for here'.

Kiki's Delivery Service and My Neighbor Totoro were basically my childhood. I'm not saying they're perfect but they're perfect in the way they hold nostalgia and being comforting while still entertaining me even now.

I sorta agree with you. The ones I liked the most were Princess Mononoke and Spirit Away. The others? Boring as fuck and didn't made me feel magical or something. I didn't even cry with the grave of the fireflies (ow-the-edge.jpg).

Eh its not for everyone.

I like it because I'm interested in animation overall and its just a big piece of Japanese animation regardless - that and when I first watched it I was a 2000s weeb teen getting into anime and Ghibli movies were being shown at the cinema between the ones that would come out after Spirited Away and the re-releases for the older works... so yeah for the latter it was mostly timing lol.

Exactly how many movies did we millennials have growing up about GIRLS going on adventures.....

IMO It's the attention to detail. The beauty created with the art is unique and in my non-artist opinion it's obvious Ghibli animation is done with a lot of attention and care.
The stories are simple enough that all audiences can enjoy it and get a feel of each character's personality, even if the person isn't around long while the animation is stunning to look at.
Upon rewatches, one may find deeper meanings and conflicts and issues with certain characters and their dynamics or they can get lost in the beauty of the animation.

Like, I don't think I'm a Studio Ghibli fan but as someone who loves films I appreciate and respect the Ghibli films I've watched.

To add to all of the above, Ghibli movies also have a significantly different sense of pacing to a lot (most) of western movies, particularly now when western movies tend to be quite frenetic and 'get to the action!', so they create a different experience for a lot of people, something slower and more carefully measured that gives you a bit of time to think and experience (and look at the gorgeous scenery).

I agree. I usually love their first half, but then I find they go off the rails (Literally in the case of Spirited Away) and drag in the second half.
