This was exactly what I wanted to say! More or less. It's not so much the animation and landscapes and all that jazz people talk about and rave, it's the storytelling. It's the characters and the details. It's Miyazaki. His stories always (no matter how dark or despairing things may appear) always have a thread of hope in them. Always look at a corner of something in the mundane -- and in that corner explore an unseen world. Nevermind any cultural nuance that someone outside of Japan might not be familiar with. There's also a ton of nostalgia. That's what I find.

I also find it's a lot of people's gateway into animated Japanese movies. Before you hit the "Perfect Blue", "Millenium Actress", "Your Name", and "The night is short, walk on girl"s of animated movies, you're going to see Ghibli. Much like you may very well have watched 10 Disney movies before watching the Pagemaster or water ship down or fire & ice to the prince of Egypt and the iron giant.
