(Anonymous) 2022-09-17 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)Also, I think when they started up a lot of anime was shouty shonen action stories, which isn't to everyone's taste, and they dug in with a brand of storytelling where quiet scenes and visually rich landscapes weren't just allowed but expected. Many of them, like Princess Mononoke, have characters where there's not a clear right and wrong, and some audiences like subtlety.
And they're strong in female characters (as real people, not just romance-objects) and that, also, could be hard to find. It's still hard to find, sometimes.
So... they established a brand as, 'you can find what you're looking for here'.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-18 05:25 am (UTC)(link)I also find it's a lot of people's gateway into animated Japanese movies. Before you hit the "Perfect Blue", "Millenium Actress", "Your Name", and "The night is short, walk on girl"s of animated movies, you're going to see Ghibli. Much like you may very well have watched 10 Disney movies before watching the Pagemaster or water ship down or fire & ice to the prince of Egypt and the iron giant.
