Boring aesthetics and boring stories. They just appeal to the broadest audience. I only like Howl's Moving Castle and it's an adaptation of a better book so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Agreed. I feel bad for not enjoying Ghibli films, being as invested in animation as I am... but... yeah. They're just so boring from a narrative standpoint.

I feel like this take only really makes sense if you ignore a huge portion of Ghibli/Miyazaki's works and instead focus exclusively on a relatively narrow segment of their output (basically Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle, and to a lesser extent Princess Mononoke)

I have prejudice towards Miyazaki mostly because I dislike Howl as an adaptation. This book was so dear to me and I hate war subplot in anime so much.

I love the book, so it's actually my least favorite Ghibli anything.

Princess Mononoke is wonderful, and probably my favorite, though this made me realize I've never actually seen Kiki's somehow.
