It annoys me the way it was done in the show because Stannis is all about bloodlines and the dynasty and Shireen was his only heir. I am perfectly willing to believe that in the currently non-existent book version he's given reasons that make it not stupid but as is, it's incredibly dumb and OOC.

This. I feel the same way about it that I feel about Dany for most of season 8. It would make sense in the book where there would be more plot and more time and it would be written to make sense. On screen it was all rushed and the reasons given didn't make sense and weren't in-character.
