I think there's a big difference between reading it and experiencing it, but you're definitely right that she thought it wouldn't apply to her. She thought the default would be that the public would love her, and probably that she'd have this amazing high flying uber-rich lifestyle plus a pretty title, and didn't understand that - despite Hollywood's claims - her American spunkiness and vivacity wasn't going to revitalise the royal family and make them adore her. The Queen was never going to boogie on down in a montage of Meghan's greatest moments, the then-Prince Charles was not going to see her as the beloved daughter he never had complete with heartwarming moments and gifts of fabulous heirloom jewels, etc etc.

Instead, her life was severely restricted and she was in a very hierarchical family where she wasn't anywhere near the top. And unsurprisingly, she didn't enjoy it.
