He and Garcia tie for least favourite for me. Heresy in the fandom, apparently.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-20 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh, they're both my faves. I suppose I go with the common fandom opinions on this one (though I've never been involved in the fandom).

(Anonymous) 2022-09-21 12:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Samies! LOL! Like OP, I get why they're popular, but not my favs

I basically like him because I'm a sucker for floppy-haired highly intelligent autistic coded guys.

Also, not really related to this secret but related to Reid, I appreciated that they at least made an attempt at destigmatizing mental illness with his mother's schizophrenia being generally sympathetically portrayed. My biggest problem with shows like Criminal Minds is how much they inevitably play into fearmongering about mental illness, so I thought it was important they made an effort there.

That he has actual empathy and kindness along with his intelligence is a plus too. The "High IQ = Asshole" trope is my least favorite.

He's not my favorite and the extent to which fandom runs with Woobie Special Main Character Reid is annoying. But at the end of the day I still like the character. It's nice when there's a funny nerdy smart character. I like that. MGG is a fun guy to watch on screen.

I liked Spencer Reid, but didn't really care for what the show did with his overall character arc so... yeah. It was a mixed feelings situation.

Liked:

* his relationship with his team, Morgan as a big brother figure, Hotch as a parental figure, JJ and Prentiss as older sisters, Garcia as his beloved twin with different interests, Rossi as a less close but fond grandpa
* That whole episode (don't recall which one) where he and Hotch are in a hostage situation at the hospital and Hotch has to pretend to loathe him while obviously trusting Reid to follow his lead and shoot the bad guy despite Reid's past track record as a not-so-great shot.
* complicated but loving relationship with his mom

Disliked:

* kidnapping/torture and big woobie potential with his drug addiction
* super lame romance arc where you just knew that girlfriend was going to die for melodrama purposes

Are you me? Because - this. Pretty much all of this, exactly.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-20 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I was pretty sure I wasn't alone in that, but it's good to have confirmation! Honestly, I liked Reid in general. He was endearingly geeky, I loved seeing his interaction and friendships with the other members of the team and how Found Family it felt even though they're all very different people. I liked seeing him go from having him look up to Gideon to realizing that Gideon wasn't perfect, and I liked seeing him look up to his team and Hotch as a new, arguably more emotionally healthy mentor. SO much potential, but I hate the woobie factor and the angst.

YUP!
I enjoyed so much of his character, but then they whole 'addicted to drugs' nonsense, and the love interest nonsense.... That show was best when it was Found Family and solving crime; when they did too much angsty backstory crap (Morgan, and Garcia, and Emily) it got boring. Hotch's 'wife is angry because his job is hardcore' arc was so trite and typical....meh. There was a lot good with that show, but I gave up on it several seasons ago.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-21 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Argghh, yes. I hated that everyone had an angsty backstory and/or episode with angst and more trauma. I think character-centric episodes get written into the actors' contracts but COME ON. Why can't we have ONE character have an episode that's focused on them being... I dunno, brilliant? Untangling a really difficult problem using the skillet they have, or by relying on their team? A glimpse of a family life or background that's, you know, fine?

I also loathed the "Hotch's 'wife is angry because his job is hardcore" arc because it felt so trite in a rather sexist way. Of COURSE his wife has to be portrayed like she's the killjoy harpy. It's not like she doesn't have legit issues about the long hours he's away from home and not seeing his kid grow up, or the risks involved! All her complaints are clearly because she's too dumb/a woman who doesn't understand how cool and awesome Hotch is! (And I say this as a person who loved Hotch as a character.)

I gave it up ages ago, too. It's a shame because I used to enjoy the show so much in its earlier seasons but the writing went downhill, IMO.

Yup, it really did go downhill. Got way too into the whole gross sexual/gore/torture crap, too. I know - show about serial killers. But they didn't have to show everything they showed.

Way too many shows do that 'character A was raped/a child soldier/blown up by terrorists/orphaned at 2 years!!' kind of junk. I, too, would like to see characters like that with healthy, happy home lives. JJ got the closest, I think, and I really loved her romance arc - it was the only one I enjoyed (before they screwed it up).

Harpy killjoy - exactly. I HATE that trope.

I love Reid, but it can be frustrating hanging out in some corners of fandom sometimes, because some people seem to act like he's the only thing about that show worth discussing and they constantly want to dump on so many of the other team members for this or that, and I'm over here liking ALL the team members, past and present (which seems to be a minority opinion in and of itself) and wanting to talk about them and whatnot and...yeah. I totally get having a favorite character and all that good stuff, but still, I do like being able to talk about other characters on a show I like sometimes as well.

...I feel like I've seen this exact secret before, along with the picture. Isn't this a repeaT?

Secret maker but not the OP

(Anonymous) 2022-09-21 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
It's a comment secret. Possibly the sentiment might be familiar, I don't know? But it's not a repeat in the sense that this exact same image and secret have been submitted before.

a secret maker

As someone who, 1. doesn't watch the show, and 2. is asexual, MGG and especially MGG as Spencer Reid, is one of the rare celebs I feel like I would go allo for. I probably wouldn't actually, like if I met him for real and had the chance. But from the comfortable remove of a screen? Goddamn he is so lovely I could cry.

So I feel like I kinda disagree with this secret on principle, lol. But maybe if I watched the show, I would end up agreeing with it, I honestly don't know. I do like awkward, brainy male characters, though, so if that's his type then I'd probably love him.
