They are hot, and therefore they must have the attributes that people find hot, like being very tall, and being very built.

Yeah, it goes the other way, too, with tall or bulky characters suddenly being tiny waifs.

Or, alternatively, the author is altering the characters' physical appearances in order to play into their preferred Dom/sub and top/bottom roles (i.e. making the Dom bigger and the top smaller) because that's what they find hottest.

Which like, I get why this bothers some people, but as long as the person isn't spouting problematic nonsense about how sexual roles work IRL I think it's fine that they have their preferences.

OP

I definitely think it's to play into the author's preference for what they find hot (which is fine, it's fic, and I don't ever leave a comment criticizing these choices -- I have a choice as a reader to move on if I don't like it), and there's no going on about sexual roles, it's just...damn. We've got characters who fit the description, and we have characters who don't. Can't you let the guy be short? Be average height? They're not overly muscular individuals. Part of what grounds me more in the fic is if the canon appearance is what's being used. It's also part of what makes the characters attractive to me. When I'm in the mood for taller characters, or more brawny characters I reach for those. But to each their own.
