Fandoms With The Best Lore

What fandoms have the best lore? You might or might not be there for the ships but you're definitely there for the fan wikis

Tolkien free space.

There's certainly a lot to sink your teeth into with Tolkein.

There certainly is!

The whole first and second ages are there to just be weird and high-powered and crazy and OTT and it's all great. And there's so much space to fill in.

Yes. I have my all-time faves but occasionally I'd just fall into a random time period and pick a character from one of the races like, bam, you're my favorite now and I can easily lose a few weeks going down that rabbit hole.

Star Trek is pretty good, given its longevity, many different installments, and ever expanding canon.

Tolkien.
Sanderson's Cosmere.
Star Wars, whether we're talking canon or EU.
Dune.
Warhammer and Warcraft(I don't even play the games, I just find the lore fascinating and really well done).
Star Trek

Dune has *great* lore. Just a really fun one to immerse yourself in high-concept science fiction weirdness and see how strange the book universe gets. Because it really goes to some weird, weird places.

Warhammer is great, although it does have the problem that at a certain point everything tends to just be awful, which can get a little same-y after a while.

Elder Scrolls and Legend of Zelda. There's just enough mystery to keep things interesting.

This might sound odd, but Harry Potter. The books have their issues, and the newer movies do, as well - and we won't even go there concerning the author!
But the world itself is extremely interesting, and I absolutely love how some fic writers have expanded it, branched off from it, and in general made it super-interesting.

Same with Supernatural. Issues abound with the actual writing of the show, but the world it presents? So much 'scope for the imagination', as Anne would say.

Also - The Expanse.

"Some" problems? There's a literal slave race that's happy to be slaves and that appears in the second book.

yeah HP is definitely one where the fic writers have done better with the universe than the original creator

Yep. People are constantly shitting on Harry Potter, but it's all sour grapes or identity politics. It was an international phenomenon for a reason and that's due to the characters, universe and story. Was it perfect? No, but it's still going down in history as one of those timeless stories just like Lord of the Rings.

Unfortunately recent bs involving the author and just everything tied into it has left me feeling sour about HP - BUT before it all I use to be fascinated by the fan theories that people would come up with prompted by the settings of the books and even movies
- such as there was a bit in one of the movies where a background wizard was reading a science book and it spurned on this idea of a community in the wizarding world who were interested in the combination of science and magic while suggesting all the implications with that theory (like people secretly working in the muggle world i the field of science while trying to understand how their magic worked, or there being a whole other part of the wizarding world that might have been working on their own science revolution against the rigid traditions that were being imposed on them by the wizard government) =.

Danny Phantom. it's not great it's hella broken, but the shards are so full of possibilities and it's ripe for molding into something workable. I mean fuck the ghost zone. SO much you can do there. The heroes probably have only seen a FRACTION of it.

I would have loved it if they had done more with the Ghost Zone. Or the whole ghost hierachy in general.

White Wolf games, especially Vampire and Mage

Just a bunch of really deep, intricate lore with a ton of history and deep weird fucked-up ideas

One Piece. I can sink so much time into the wiki. And I just want to know what happened during the void century so bad.

Genshin Impact lore goes surprisingly deep and is super interesting.

Dishonored - the thing that keeps me coming back to the games is not the plot or the characters, but the world in general.

Devil May Cry is one that pops out to me. There's so much potential and history and I'm so excited for what the future games do with it!
