Omg, I read about that scene and thought the show probably isn’t for me because of it. I didn’t see it, so I can’t judge either way whether the scene was “justified” or handled the material well, but it sounds like it would be really painful for me to watch and ruin my enjoyment of the show for me personally. I’m sorry it was so rough for you, OP. Hope you’ve been feeling a bit better since submitting this.

it's basically a different kind of torture porn, just this time with childbirth and not rape. so it's "different!!!" from GOT

Yeah. I know I did this to myself. Fucking clown me over here, knowing perfectly well that GoT proved that creators within this franchise will never change, and yet still crawling back expecting anything different. It's still an orgy of violence against, subjugation of and degredation of women. This scene was specifically horrifying not for the gore, but for the moment this poor woman realises that even she, the goddamn queen, is not immune - the husband who has loved and cared for her for decades, who she thought she was safe with, can still make a simple decree that her life is not as important as whatever male child she is carry and order her immediate vivisection. You can see the mental ground shifting beneath her as she realises. It honestly makes me feel sick.

Why do I keep doing this to myself.

From the beginnings of GOT I was disgusted by the misogynist violence and was surprised with the fact it was so beloved and won major awards! Clearly, the showrunners have learned nothing.

It's also ahistorical and stupid - this was not a thing that was done, at all, ever, because child mortality pre-vaccines is AT BEST still 25%. I won't go into detail about what they did instead, but let's just say that "save the mother over the child" was a thing, and the opposite was not. This is absolutely not real and feeds right into the "we say it's historical but actually it's torture porn" bullshit that Game of Thrones was into.

I agree but we don't need to blame this on game of thrones, the show.

grrm has this happen to another of the targs so (Aemma's grandmother I think), so it's just what grrm is into. ETA: it actually makes more sense in the show than the book because it’s not “mother or child” it’s “child or no one” and viserys wants a male heir so bad he’s willing to violate his wife’s autonomy to get it.

But the entirety of the show and grrm’s understanding of court politics is deranged tbqf.
