Characters are characters, not people with real feelings who can want more than they were given.

Because we can look at their narrative and think that there are interesting things that could have been done with the narrative, or because we can imagine them as real people and think that - were they real people - they would be owed something.

Also, if a character doesn't have a story, what makes people look at them and say that character, in particular, deserved to have one?

All kinds of things.

Do you not have an imagination?
