I agree that it's ugly but I used to play it during some some dark times in my life and it still is one of my main comfort feel good games of choice.
I used to play it back on Pc back in the day and used a shitton of visual mods which was kinda jarring after switching to mobile after some time of not playing, not gonna lie. But I'm still very fond of it and I absolutely love the music.

The things I've enjoyed about Stardew definitely do not include its art style. It's serviceable enough, and that's the best I can say about it.

honestly? i'm not sure

possibly it's the connotations of glurgey cuteness? like the name and concept and art style always ends up suggesting "cute games in cute colours where you get to watch cute things do cute things and be cute", which is maybe fine once in a while but when you've got even people like yahtzee saying they're going to be the Next Big Thing (it's yahtzee, so amount of seriousness is questionable) i just find myself wanting them all to go away

What rubs me the wrong way, mostly, is that this is the shit you get over and over again when you're in female-centric game communities. It's like...I'm supposed to like it because I have tits, or something.

UGH THIS. I honestly can't stand those sorts of games, I find them hideously boring. But god forbid you say that out loud.

Like, sorry I'd rather play Resident Evil or Overwatch, I guess?

Yup. I love the Story of Seasons/Harvest Moon games and I'd probably LOVE Stardew Valley but every time I look at it, I cringe. It hurts my eyes to look at.

My main issue with Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons is that there have been very few games in those franchises that allow same sex romance (... just one, actually? Idk) So I'm not really interested on principle. Also, where Stardew is ugly, some of the other games are too saccharine and cutesy in style for me, too.

The last three SoS/RF (Friends of Mineral Town remake, Pioneers of Olive Town, Rune Factory 5) games allow same sex marriage actually! The recently announced A Wonderful Life remake has already been confirmed gonna have same sex marriage and non-binary player option too.

That's a legit crit of them, yeah! The problem is the JP developers don't want the same sex romances. A few of them have 'best friends' endings instead which, for the remake of Friends of Mineral Town, the NA release just flat out chucked the 'best friends' idea out the window and went 'yeah, here's the same sex romances, as they should have be!'

It's... a work in progress?

I like them though because they're cute, excellent time killers, and I've been playing them since I was tiny. They've got a lot of good memories associated with them for me.

I quite like Stardew Valley, but I agree that it certaintly isn't the prettiest game nor is it revolutionary.

I mean, I like it better than Rune Factory or Story of Seasons because at least you can play a woman and date women*. And I like the game mechanics a lot. I'm not particularly here for the art, though.

*Yes, it's still pretty heteronormative in that there's no queerness except what you bring yourself, but that's still a step up from most.

OP, I'm a gay man myself, the new Story of Seasons and Rune Factory games do allow for same sex romance! Some of the characters are really good (though RF 5 doesn't let you romance the single moms who seems like the best choices to me...)-- I do appreciate that about Stardew Valley in spite of my petty dislike, though. But I recommend at least checking out Pioneers of Olive Town and RF5 to see if any of the bachelorettes appeal to you.

Both RF5 and SOS:FoMT and SOS: PoOT have gay marriage as an option.

I gave up on playing that game partly because it was so ugly. I thought it was just me because everyone else seems to love the game.

As a long time fan of Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons, this is exactly how I think about Stardew Valley.
