People in Britain will never abandon the monarchy. Petulant pride in the monarchy is all they have left.

That and idealising the suffering on the home front in and post WWII. The English worship suffering, for some reason.

We get socialized to believe it 'builds character' and when someone suggests that perhaps we don't glorify suffering and make things better for people it gets scoffed at. It's part of the 'stiff upper lip' culture which I get in some ways but mostly it just means you're never meant to talk about actual problems and suffer silently.

Always amuses me to hear this, especially from Americans. Free healthcare. Strict gun control. Free state abortions. Do we live in a utopia? No. Is the UK perfect? No. Do we have to bankrupt ourselves for medicine or live in daily fear of being shot? No. Are women able to access family planning services? Yes.

You tried, America, but all you did was build a new country with a new ruling faux-aristocracy class and even worse social problems.

Maybe one day we'll vote to get rid of the monarchy, but that's really a decision for the citizens of the UK. Everyone else's opinions can go hang.

Have you read the news lately

(Anonymous) 2022-09-28 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Unless something major has happened in the last 5 minutes, none of the points I've made above have changed.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-28 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
The reality is that the political conditions that allowed for the creation of the NHS are almost entirely a thing of the past, that the UK as a country is now primarily governed by racist tabloid editors, and that your ruling political class is in the process of maniacally crashing the entire country into the rocks economically to strip as much wealth and economic well-being out of people as they can.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-28 08:50 am (UTC)(link)
it's true that you couldn't create the nhs today (i love it, most of my family are in care work, my mum's a nurse, etc, but an ever-ageing population means it's utterly fucked unless we shove it all the money it can eat), but fortunately we already did and despite the doom-mongers (including myself) it's not going away any time soon

the uk's biggest mess is that our economy is entirely built on ever spiralling house prices, and no government that does anything to address that will remain in government for very long

(Anonymous) 2022-09-28 09:28 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, yes, because the media has no influence at all in the US.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-28 10:09 am (UTC)(link)
Never said that wasn't true. Unfortunately for you, despite the pretty bad state of our country we still have everything I listed. *Shrugs* Plus it was only one election ago that your government was also a shitshow.

Yeah our media is fucked, but then so is yours so eh.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-28 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Political media is more fucked in the UK than in the US, and the fucked parts of the media are way more influential in the UK than in the US

(Anonymous) 2022-09-28 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean... not really. The only thing is that the US has a much higher population and it's more difficult to manipulate such a high number of people but Fox News and the likes had a huge part in pushing Trump so...

(Anonymous) 2022-09-28 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Genuinely, right-wing media is distinct from the mainstream media in the US in a way that it is not in the UK. Murdoch media is both substantially larger and more influential in the UK than it is in the US. In the US, it's essentially a cult that has very devoted adherents and effectively no reach outside of that. In the UK, it sets the agenda and the tempo for media as a whole, and the liberal and centrist papers are at best a muted counterpoint. Right-wing media harassment and hate campaigns are tacitly accepted or encouraged by major political actors across the political spectrum.

I'm from the British Isles. I'm under no illusions how shitty the UK is, and you are painting a very rose tinted picture there. Britain in general, and England in specific, needs to get all the way down from its high horse.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-28 09:05 am (UTC)(link)
da

i love how saying "is the uk perfect? no" is now "a very rose tinted picture", like unless you're sitting there and declaring the country to be an irredeemable crock of shit every thirty seconds then you're an english knuckle-dragging bnp voting racist

(Anonymous) 2022-09-28 10:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. I still believe in my country, even if it's not in a good place right now. There are good people here of all races. I have to believe we'll find our way again. In the meantime, I'm not going to sit by and let others bad mouth it. Especially people from a country that is as culpable for a share of historic and modern global suffering, is more racist, is as corrupt, and lets its people die in poverty rather than help the poorest who fall ill.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-28 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
You sound British and White.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-28 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
your point being

(Anonymous) 2022-09-28 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry - the English aren’t allowed to hang people for pointing out their country’s a shithole any more. I know that’s a sore spot for some of you.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-28 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Weird reaction. Here are three factual things that are good about the UK. Nothing else is being claimed.

Your reaction: THE UK MUST ALWAYS BE ENTIRELY NEGATIVE!1!1!1

You're an idiot.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-28 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, unlike in the US, people don't get executed anymore in the UK.
