Re: Finishing books you aren't liking?
(Anonymous) 2022-09-28 01:26 am (UTC)(link)I have a "system" for deciding if I want to continue a book. It's flexible, but it's usually:
1) If the first 10-15 pages are REALLY BAD and/or I hate the writing style, I drop it. Doesn't happen too often, but it does.
2) If the first 30-40 pages are decent but I'm not really interested in the story's premise or the setting, I consider dropping it. I will first try to skim ahead and see if it becomes more interesting. If not, dropped.
3) If after 80 pages the story doesn't give me any real "hook" I drop it.
If the book bores me or I get distracted with other medias and I've passed the 150 pages mark or 2/3 of the book, I just put it on hold. I've returned and finished books after 3 or 4 years on hold. I have a decent memory for books, but not for fanfictions or TV shows. If I put TV shows on hold mid season is highly possible I will never finish them.
At the moment I think I have 6 (?) books on hold from the last 2 years. I read a lot of diffent fictional books, but I don't finish too many. I maybe start 50 in a year but finish only 20.
I don't count non-fictional books and essays in this. They don't follow this "system" at all.
