Finishing books you aren't liking?

(Anonymous) 2022-09-28 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Do you guys finish a book if you aren't liking it?

Up until now I've always finished any book I started reading even if I wasn't liking it. But last night I was reading a book that I was kind of meh on (I was kind of annoyed by one of the main characters but decided to overlook it), but then the other MC just proceeded to get more awful until a particular scene happened that really annoyed me and I was fed up enough that I started rethinking my "always finish everything policy". I've dropped plenty of TV shows once I stopped enjoying them, so I don't know why I feel compelled to read books I don't like.

Anyway, how do you all feel about finishing books you aren't enjoying? Do you give a book a certain amount of pages or chapters or something to get better/decide whether to continue, or do you just give up as soon as you realize you aren't liking it?

What are you guys' thoughts?

I often don't even finish books that I like, but don't like that much. For books I don't like there's no way I'm finishing it. There is not enough time on this earth. I have no mercy.

When I was younger I always finished books, even if I wasn't enjoying them. These days, though, I won't waste the time. If I'm a third of the way into the book (or sometimes less) and not enjoying, I give up.

Same. I don't have time to read stuff I don't like.

Yup. I already have to read stuff I don't like for work, not going to spend my free time doing it.

My reading time is precious and I read for enjoyment. If a book isn’t enjoyable, I abandon it for one that is. I have never understood a lot of the pseudo-intellectual BS about every print copy is sacred and you must finish every book you start; neither is even remotely true and goes hand in hand with gatekeeping reading from filthy casuals who don’t read the “right” things.

I used to finish every book I opened, but I just don't have time to do that anymore. If the book doesn't grab me in the first three chapters, I drop it. I do feel a little bad about it, which is weird 'cause I don't feel bad about dropping TV shows. Maybe it's because books usually have an author's picture and a little profile and all these little things in the acknowledgement that remind you that this is a person who worked really hard to create something. I know TV shows have lots of people working hard too, but you don't get much from them besides a name and, if they're an actor, a face.

No. I already have such a reluctance to read in general, because of books I had to read in school and had to drag myself through. If I'm not captivated after the first chapter, then it goes back to the library unread.

I'll fall off of books I'm not enjoying, I'll just have other things to do than read a mediocre book. I might get back to them some day, I might now, I won't sweat it.

I stop reading books when they piss me off. Like, I put them down and add in my 'return to library' pile. That's pretty rare.

If it isn't for school/education I'm not finishing it.

I have a "system" for deciding if I want to continue a book. It's flexible, but it's usually:
1) If the first 10-15 pages are REALLY BAD and/or I hate the writing style, I drop it. Doesn't happen too often, but it does.
2) If the first 30-40 pages are decent but I'm not really interested in the story's premise or the setting, I consider dropping it. I will first try to skim ahead and see if it becomes more interesting. If not, dropped.
3) If after 80 pages the story doesn't give me any real "hook" I drop it.

If the book bores me or I get distracted with other medias and I've passed the 150 pages mark or 2/3 of the book, I just put it on hold. I've returned and finished books after 3 or 4 years on hold. I have a decent memory for books, but not for fanfictions or TV shows. If I put TV shows on hold mid season is highly possible I will never finish them.
At the moment I think I have 6 (?) books on hold from the last 2 years. I read a lot of diffent fictional books, but I don't finish too many. I maybe start 50 in a year but finish only 20.
I don't count non-fictional books and essays in this. They don't follow this "system" at all.

If I didn't pay for the book then fuck it, the book gets dropped as soon as boredom sets in. If I *did* pay for the book then I gotta read the whole thing to justify to myself having wasted the money.

Basically the same here. If it's a gift from someone I feel especially obliged to try and finish it, but I got one from my partner's mum that I just can not get through. I've tried. I gave it a go. Got halfway. But I'm so bored.

Only once. I finished it cause it was a series and I really liked the first book. But by the third book I hated the series lol

I used to make a point to finish books when I was young, but now? Fuck that. Don't do it, life's too short.

I usually just flip through it and skim the pages to get a general idea of how it ends, because I'm always a little curious about endings whether I like the book or not.

Sometimes I skip to somewhere near the end to check what's going on and decide if it's worth continuing, but I haven't found one that was so far. Sometimes if the book is okayish but I'm just not really interested I just put it aside until I decide if I want to read it or forget about it.

No.
I hardly can finish books I like this days.
Even if this book was a present I go "nah" and give it out at bookcrossing or to the library.
I think that policy of finishing media especially books is quite toxic. You've finished this book and for what?
